Strengthening the Community Lunch & Learns

Caring for Older Adults

Caring for Older Family Members
At some point in our lives most of us will experience a change in roles with an older family member. Often this can be a difficult transition, especially if you aren't sure when to step in and help your loved one. If you don't know about the kinds of help available in the community, the responsibilities of caring for someone can seem overwhelming and exhausting. This session helps you to recognize signs and symptoms that may indicate an older person is in need of help. You will also learn more about the resources available to assist you and your relative, whether they live next door or across the country. Presented by Senior Services.

Memory Loss
The health of your brain plays a critical role in almost everything you do. Serious memory loss, confusion and other major changes in how our minds work is not a normal part of aging. Learn how to distinguish between normal age-related memory changes in a loved one and the signs of dementia including Alzheimer's disease, at this session. You will also learn about risk factors for developing Alzheimer's disease and other dementias and some ways to reduce this risk. Presented by the Alzheimer's Association, Western and Central Washington Chapter.

Staying Healthy
We know that the risk of disease and disability increases with age, but rest assured that poor health is not an inevitable consequence of aging. Much of the illness, disability, and discomfort associated with chronic disease is avoidable. Research shows that older adults with appropriate levels of physical activity and social interaction experience a slower decline, fewer instances of depression and spend less time in hospitals. In this session you will learn ways to help older family members stay healthy throughout the aging process. Presented by Senior Services.
