Luis: Small business dream comes true

Through United Way of King County's Individual Development Program, Luis saved money to set up an office and hire staff. Today he volunteers as a financial advisor for the program, giving back to the organization that helped him.

Dale was always on top of things, except when it came to knowing what to do when his premature daughter wasn't developing normally. Thanks to assistance from a United Way of King County grantee, his daughter has grown up healthy and strong.

Amina, formerly homeless, secured housing and enrolled her son in a program to prepare for kindergarten through agencies supported by United Way of King County. Today she is working and attending college, hoping to graduate and become a nurse so she can help others.

Kalpita was one of 300 talented United Way of King County volunteers who dedicated 10,000 hours to preparing 11,288 tax forms during our 2007 Free Tax Preparation Campaign, refunding $13.5 million to the community.

Sara: Beating the odds

Nothing in her parents' prenatal visits ever indicated that Sara was in trouble, but when she was born, it was obvious that she was profoundly disabled. Sara was not expected to survive past the age of 3 is not in her late 20's thanks to the support of numerous United Way agencies.

After fleeing an abusive situation, Monica her children were homeless and living in a car. They were able to find a safe home and the support services they needed to start over thanks to the support of United Way of King County and its community partners.

Mary: Dealing with an expected retirement

Mary planned to enjoy a relaxed retirement one of these days but an on-the-job injury forced her to retire early. She no longer felt like a productive member of society and plunged into a deep depression. United Way of King County helped Mary get her life back on track.
