In July 2009, a group of community leaders went on the inaugural "Climb for the Community" to the top of Mount Rainier. Their purpose: raise awareness and money for United Way of King County's Response for Basic Needs, which provides help for families, disabled people and seniors being hard hit by the economic downturn. The 2009 Climb raised over $350,000 for people in need.
Thank you 2009 Climb for the Community Team!

For those of you who just can't get enough of United Way's Climb for the Community, you'll want to tune in to KING 5 or KONG 6/16 tomorrow to catch their complete coverage of the Climb. The images they were able to catch are breathtaking, and their exclusive interviews will really put you right there on the mountain with Seahawks coach Jim Mora, United Way CEO Jon Fine and other members of the Climb team. You can catch the spot at 10 p.m. on KONG 6/16 and at 11 p.m. on KING 5.
Cue the Barry Manilow music (I am getting old!), we reached our online fundraising goal of $30,000 for the Climb for the Community! Thank you to everyone who gave and asked 5 friends (or more) to join them. Your generous gifts will help people in need keep a roof overhead and food on the table.
Mountaineering legend Ed Viesturs was one of the guides for the Climb. He’s also a world-class photographer. Click here to check out a slideshow of his photos from the summit of Mount Rainier.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Seattle Seahawks head coach Jim Mora have gotten most of the press attention related to United Way’s Climb for the Community. But what about Tod Leiweke, Seattle Seahawks CEO and the man with the original idea for the Climb?
Tod was right there on the top of Mount Rainier Wednesday morning celebrating with the commissioner and Coach Mora. In fact, this is his second summit of the mountain. He climbed it for the first time last summer.
Here are some reflections from Tod about the Climb:

We asked people to give us 5, and they did…and more! Yesterday, we raised exactly $4,500 in online donations for the Climb for the Community. It’s amazing that we did that in just one day! The money will go to United Way’s Response for Basic Needs, which will provide housing, food and support for people being hard hit by the economic downturn. Funds from the Response are already making more food available for food banks and meal programs. The overall plan is to put 6 million more pounds of food into the emergency food system.
