Q: What is the Gates Challenge?
A: In 1999, The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation gave a special grant of $30 million to United Way of King County's Endowment Fund. United Way has raised an additional $54.5 million since that time. The grant has provided $26 million in income to United Way since its inception and continues to grow.
Q: Are you still taking gifts to the challenge?
A: Yes, although the challenge is complete at this point, all gifts to the endowment will be matched up to $55 million through June 20, 2010.
Q: What does the challenge mean to United Way of King County and our community?
A: We are, and will be in the future, the largest operating United Way endowment in the nation.
In the 10 years after fund completion, $50 million will be disbursed directly to United Way of King County, meaning approximately $5 million per year for the next 10 years will come directly to United Way of King County. It will continue to lower our operating ratio so that the majority of donor dollars coming in will go directly into investing in programs and services to address critical issues in our community.
Q: Should I divide my gift between United Way of King County's annual fundraising campaign and the Gates Challenge endowment program?
A: Please don't divide your gift. The most critical of all gift categories is the annual fundraising campaign. These are precious dollars that need to be working in the community. We suggest making an endowment gift from appreciated assets and endowing your critical annual leadership support forever.
Q: If I make a gift to this endowment program, will my company match it?
A: Check with your company to see if a matching program is in place.
Q: How is the directed giving fee applied?
A: There are no fees applied to gifts for the Gates Challenge endowment. However, combined giving may incur fees. Remember, as long as you give 100% to United Way of King County, there are never fees associated with your giving.
Q: How is The Seattle Foundation involved in the Gates Challenge Endowment?
A: The Seattle Foundation administers the Gates Challenge Cost Reduction Endowment on behalf of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Additionally, all Gates Challenge endowment dollars are invested through The Seattle Foundation for United Way of King County.
Q: How can I establish a named family fund?
A: A gift to the Gates Challenge endowment of $25,000 or more allows you to establish a family named fund at The Seattle Foundation.
Q: Will my family name be recognized after my lifetime?
A: Yes, this is a permanent fund you are establishing and recognition will pass on from generation to generation.
Q: When I give to the annual campaign and the Gates Challenge, how is my giving recognized?
A: Donors can increase the level of recognition by giving to both the annual campaign and the Gates Challenge endowment for cost reduction. Contact your relationship manager or Ruby Smith Love for more information.
