History of the challenge

In December 1999, the Gates Challenge Endowment was seeded with a $30 million gift. In 2004 Bill Neukom was named as chair of the challenge and brought key leadership that helped United Way cultivate valuable relationships. Five donors have made gifts to the challenge of more than $1 million. To date, more than 4,000 pledges have been made. Contributions from the Gates Foundation to the endowment will equal $85 million at completion of the challenge.

Gates Challenge details

  • Gifts of cash, appreciated stocks and securities were sought.
  • Planned and deferred gifts were encouraged. Irrevocable charitable trusts and annuity instruments qualify for the match based on IRS gift tables. Bequests and pledges do not qualify for a match until they are paid in full.
  • Multiple-year pledges were matched upon receipt.
  • Matching funds will be contributed by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to the endowment each July through June 2010, based on contributions made in the prior fiscal year.
