Population

• King County’s estimated population in 2008 was 1,861,792.
• An estimated 124,758 people were added to the county between 2000 and 2008.

• King County represents 28.6% of Washington State’s population.
• Between 2000 and 2008 the County population grew at a rate of 7.2%.
• The County’s distinct position as the largest population center in the State poses many opportunities and challenges.

Subregional Boundaries
  • King County is divided into four regions in order to distinguish trends at finer level of detail.   
  • Boundaries are delineated using the 19 school districts serving the county.  Read more about Geographic Boundaries.
  • Data is queried by census tract then grouped by district boundaries to create a subregion.

Using the 2000 census tract boundaries, the data is organized as follows:

  • North King County 31 census tracts
  • East King County 88 census tracts
  • South King County 130 census tracts

Subregional Population

Between 1990-2000, the U.S. Census reports that King County grew at a rate of 15.2%, with an additional 7.2% growth in the last eight years (2000-2008). The following data shows how distinct growth patterns are emerging by subregion.

North King County
  • North King County currently makes up 7.7% of the King County population.
  • 1990 to 2000 growth rate: 9.7%. (12,322 people).
  • 2000 to 2008 growth rate 2.8% (3,916 people).
  • This represents the slowest growth rate among King County subregions.
East King County
  • East King County currently represents 24.9% of the total County population.
  • 1990 to 2000 growth rate: 19.4% (67,064)
  • 2000 to 2008 growth rate: 12.3% (50,778 people)
  • East King county has recorded the highest growth rate since 2000
South King County
  • South King County has the largest population with 35.6% of the total county population.
  • 1990 to 2000 growth rate: 20.0% (103,205).
  • 2000 to 2008 growth rate 6.9% (42,636 people).
  • South King County has the second highest growth rate and largest population
Seattle
  • Seattle currently has the second highest population with 31.7% of the total King County population.
  • 1990 to 2000 growth rate: 9.1% (47,121)
  • 2000 to 2008 growth rate 4.9% (27,428 people)

Our demographic data is based on secondary sources. The 2008 population estimates and five-year projections are compiled using the 2008 Claritas data set. Other sources -- including the 2000 Decennial Census, 2007 American Community Survey and the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, Washington, Office of Financial Management, WA -- are used to add context and expand upon the core data set.
