Elder Abuse
Elder Abuse may encompass domestic violence; it can also
include a single, or repeated act, or lack of action
occurring within any relationship where there is an
expectation of trust which causes harm or distress to an
older adult. Sixty-63% of the victims of elder abuse are 60
and older.
By comparing the 2003 and 2004 cases of elder abuse
reported to DSHS, we see an increase in the number of
reported and investigated incidents of elder abuse. As the
baby boom population ages into their 60’s and older, it is
possible that the known incidence of elder abuse will
increase.
