More than 10,500 volunteers from 120 companies tackled 411 service projects on September 24 across King County as part of United Way of King County's annual Day of Caring.

United Way's Day of Caring is Washington state's largest single day mobilization of volunteers and also serves as the official kick-off of United Way of King County's fundraising campaign.

“I can’t think of a better way to kick-off United Way’s fundraising campaign than to have so many people giving their time, to make our community stronger,” said Jon Fine, CEO of United Way of King County.  “United Way of King County is about making fundamental change and a key strategy to solving our community's toughest problems is volunteerism.”

In 2009, United Way of King County connected 33,000 individuals to service projects, and that number is on the rise.  United Way attributes the increase to a better understanding of the issues facing the community, and to its new website, featuring a powerful online volunteer matching service.

"It has never been easier to find a volunteer opportunity that fits your personal interests and lifestyle," said Fine. "When you register on our volunteer website, you can search for projects based on a range of criteria, including issue, location, age appropriateness, time commitment and more.  United Way is making it easy for people to connect to relevant and meaningful projects and that’s a big reason we're seeing more folks volunteering."
