UWKC Helps Red Cross Respond to Storm Disaster
The severe winter storm that blew through Puget Sound last month brought snow, ice and wind, toppled trees, telephone poles and power lines, and left thousands of homes cold and in the dark.
For the Red Cross, a United Way grantee, disaster response is all about supporting people in need. Over the course of several days after the storm the Red Cross:
- Managed or supported 8 shelters in Issaquah, Federal Way, Olympia, Yelm, Black Diamond, Puyallup and Buckley
- Provided 310 overnight stays
- Served more than 3,400 meals and snacks
- Acted as home away from home for 83 adults and children
- Provided safety, warmth and a hot meal to 100 people needing daytime shelter
- Distributed 104 comfort kits with hygiene and other basic supplies
Thanks to United Way donors, our community has a strong and reliable safety net we can count on when storms and other disasters occur.
