Workplace campaigns utilize unique approaches for giving

Sun trumps "The Donald" for Qwest campaign

Qwest and the United Way giving campaign team took an interesting approach to their workplace giving campaign this year by issuing a challenge to executive leadership based on The Apprentice. James Sun, a former Apprentice contestant and founder/CEO of Zoodango (which ran their first ever workplace giving campaign this year), played the role of Donald Trump. James energized employees with comments about Qwest's spirit, wowed them with Trump-like pronouncements and delivered a strong message about the importance of United Way and the results we achieve. He then "hired" one of the leaders as the winner of the challenge. It was all made possible by support from The Communications Workers of America Local 7800 and its President, Malachy Sreenan, who was heavily involved in planning the event. Way to go CWA Local 7800 and Qwest!

Tully's features special promotion to benefit United Way

Tully's Coffee helped kick off the annual United Way campaign season by sponsoring United Way's first ever Loaned Executive Alumni Event in the Historic Mountain Room at its corporate headquarters, and by running a special promotion in September to benefit United Way of King County. The special promotion featured two key elements:

  • United Way branded Tully's coffee cards
  • A "Team Up" event on September 21 -- Day of Caring.

Tully's gave 10% of all coffee card orders of more than $250 directly to United Way, and donated 15% of all retail sales from King County Tully's locations during Day of Caring. Overall, the company raised a total of $12,000 for United Way of King County. Thank you Tully's!

My campaign is finished, now what?

Now that campaigns are coming to a close, here are a few simple steps you can follow to wrap-up:

  1. Make sure your payroll department has a copy of all payroll deduction pledges.
  2. Call United Way of King County's customer service department at 206.461.5005 or e-mail customerservice@uwkc.org. They will put you in touch with the appropriate staff member to help you get everything wrapped up.
  3. Make sure to thank your co-workers for helping support their community! Visit unitedwayofkingcounty.org/stufftouse for sample thank-you letters you can send.

Thank you for running a workplace campaign! Together, we are changing our community in fundamental, lasting ways.

Congratulations new campaigns

New campaigns used eWay, created kick-off e-mails, created company matches for employee gifts, hosted internal competitions between departments and held United Way presentations. Here's a few results:

  • Plaza Bank held its first workplace giving campaign and participated in Day of Caring.
  • Avanade ran a nationwide eWay campaign and offered a company match of 9.5%.
  • Wireless Advocates' campaign included a new 1:1 corporate match.
  • Issaquah Community Bank ran a campaign only four months after opening its doors in July.

Thank you to all of our newest workplace giving campaigns for your support!

We're celebrating you!

Sounding off pays in increased gifts

Sellen Construction recently asked its employees why they gave to United Way of King County. Several employees responded with short essays, which Sellen distributed to its entire workforce. The tactic helped Sellen Construction increase its campaign by 25%!

Here's a sampling of employees' thoughts:

I give to United Way for totally selfish reasons. It's easy, it's painless, it makes sense, it's flexible, and it makes me feel really good. It's simply, selfishly, satisfying to feel like I'm doing my part to help others. Give it a try! Be selfish - you won't regret it!

-- Trudy Powers Hoffman, Project Manager & Past Sellen Campaign Coordinator

The first reason (I give) is that I believe in United Way. When I was six I was diagnosed with a learning disability. Growing up, my parents championed my learning...but children (without this support) often get cast aside in our educational system. The second reason is that payroll deductions make my contributions easy. I don't even notice the money missing from my checking account, and I did a good deed without even trying.

-- Jessica Quinn, Safety & Risk Coordinator

I give to United Way because there are thousands of nonprofit organizations in King County that are providing services that may otherwise not exist. With payroll deduction I can easily give and I know my money is going to the most needed and most valuable services.

-- Shanthi Pathi, Jobsite Administrative Assistant

United Way supports one of my favorite organizations, the YWCA. A few years ago I volunteered in a YWCA program called LIP (Leaders in Progress). The mission was to develop leadership skills in young women and improve their self-confidence and chance at life success. I witnessed girls in the YWCA program bloom with confidence and become aware of the world around them.
