Nordstrom helps fashion strong communities

Nordstrom's support of United Way of King County is helping change the lives of thousands of people for the better. This year's local campaign reached almost $2 million. Nordstrom also had eight teams volunteer for United Way's annual Day of Caring. The company was a key supporter of the Gates Challenge, which helps significantly reduce United Way's operating costs. Thanks Nordstrom, for setting the style for corporate giving.

Welcome new campaigns

Congratulations to Doug Fox Travel & Cruise/USTravel for its first-ever local workplace campaign at its Washington offices. The company has held workplace campaigns in its Alaska offices for several years. Employees in the Washington offices raised $2,395 and the company matched all contributions 1:1 for a total of more than $4,700. The company also invited staff from United Way of King County and grantee Pike Market Childcare and Pre-school to help motivate employees to give. Congratulations to Doug Fox Travel & Cruise/USTravel and thanks for expanding your workplace giving campaigns.

United Way's Free Tax Preparation Campaign offers free tax preparation services and access to the Earned Income Tax Credit and other tax credits to help working families increase their incomes and create savings. Being financially stable reduces the risk of becoming homeless. Thanks to these companies for providing volunteers, grants, equipment, free check cashing vouchers and sponsorship support for this year's campaign: Bank of America; Key Bank, Viking Bank, Homestreet Bank, HR Block, Microsoft, Weyerhauser and Boeing.

In 2007, 300 volunteers dedicated 10,000 hours, prepared 11,288 tax returns and helped return $13.5 million in Federal Refunds back to the community, including $4.4 million in Earned Income Tax Credits. The Free Tax Preparation Campaign saved customers more than $800,000 in tax preparation fees.
