If you
want to help children thrive, the best place to start is by supporting their
parents—children’s first and best teachers. Since Mother’s Day is this
month, consider how you might best support the moms you know (including you,
if that applies).
While
breakfast in bed and massages are nice, what moms really need is a strong
support network, year-round, so they can take care of themselves because if
a mother’s physical or emotional health fails, she will not be able to care
for her children. If a mother is lucky, she will have lots of family and
friends to help her through the daily pressures of caring for a family. What
about those who don’t?
United
Way of King County knows that mothers (and fathers) need a continuum of
ongoing support and that one of the best ways to ensure that all parents get
the help they need is to help shape effective public policy. Thanks to many
of you who helped contact your legislators during the 2007 session, our
state can now celebrate
significant victories for parents and children, including $2 million for
play-and-learn groups, parent education workshops, a
parent resource and referral hotline, and a public awareness campaign.
The
art of being a mom is all about balance, which requires community support.
This Mother’s Day, consider honoring the critical role mothers play by
making a
donation of time or money to United Way.
