Become a United Way Volunteer Reader
Celebrate National Volunteer Week April 16-20 by joining United Way of King County's Volunteer Reader program. It's one of the best ways you can help to prepare children for success in school—and life.
When you read aloud with kids on a regular basis, you not only build their language, learning and social skills, you make learning fun and meaningful. Connect with a child who needs you! By simply committing a couple of hours a week of your time, you can have a profound impact on the lives of the children you help.
United Way of King County is currently recruiting volunteers to read aloud to young children (ages 3-5), one-on-one, at preschools, Head Start classrooms, and child care centers throughout our community on a weekly basis.

Free tax prep helps working families
United Way of King County is providing free tax preparation and access to the Earned Income Tax Credit and other tax credits to help working families increase their incomes and create savings. Free tax preparation allows working people to keep more of their hard-earned money and avoid paying unnecessary fees for commercial tax preparation and "rapid refund" loans. Being financially stable reduces the risk of becoming homeless.
Last year, United Way of King County helped return approximately $10 million in federal refunds back to the community, including $3.2 million in Earned Income Tax Credits. The campaign saved tax customers more than $610,000 in tax preparation fees.
The April 17 tax deadline is just around the corner. Please help us spread the word about this important community service. Tell everyone you know!

Alternative Spring Break 2007
For the second year, United Way of America and MTV recruited young people age 18-24 from all across the country to spend a week rebuilding the Gulf Coast after the devastating hurricanes of 2005. Participants spent a week in Lake Charles, Louisiana, this time helping those affected by Hurricane Rita. The teams were hosted by United Way of Southwest Louisiana and rehabilitated existing homes, built new homes and cleared and rehabilitated a Campfire USA youth camp.
