Help working families keep more of what they earn
Tax season is quickly approaching and we're looking for volunteers to help working families keep more of what they earn. United Way's Free Tax Preparation Campaign provides free tax preparation services to help low-to-moderate income families take advantage of the Earned Income Tax Credit and other tax credits. More than 300 volunteers prepared 11,288 tax returns last year, returning approximately $13 million in federal refunds including $4 million in Earned Income Tax Credits back to the community through United Way of King County's Free Tax Campaign. Services available at the tax sites include free, quality tax preparation and electronic filing and assistance in signing up for certain public benefits.
Volunteers for the Free Tax Campaign are required to complete a two-day training covering tax law and TaxWise software. Training sessions for the 2008 season will begin in early December. Volunteers provide tax help to immigrants including multilingual services and applications for individual tax payer identification numbers. Cambodian, Vietnamese, Spanish, Somali, Amharic, Korean, Chinese, Tigrinya, and Russian speakers are especially needed.
