By David Okimoto

David OkimotoLikely anyone you ask will agree that poverty is a root cause of homelessness. And, in fact, we know this to be true. But how do you translate combating poverty into ending homelessness? One way is to ensure that those most at risk are able to keep more of what they earn. That's why United Way of King County and its partners are teaming up to once again offer the Free Tax Preparation Campaign.

Volunteers file returns and, if people are eligible, help them file for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and other tax credits. The EITC can increase the disposable income of a working family by as much as $4,500.

The campaign, now in its fifth year, is proving tremendously successful. Last year, we helped return about $10 million in federal refunds back to the community, including $3.2 million in Earned Income Tax Credits. And the campaign saved tax customers more than $610,000 in tax preparation fees.

This year's Free Tax Preparation Campaign will utilize more than 300 volunteers to help prepare an estimated 10,000 returns. All returns will be electronically filed and can be directly deposited for a rapid refund.

Customers will also be able to sign up for certain public benefits and learn about opportunities they have to make the most of their tax returns—from opening or expanding savings accounts to improving credit scores and financial skills.

You can be part of this highly successful anti-poverty program and help us put an end to homelessness in our community:

  • Tell everyone about it. Word of mouth is still the best form of advertising. Post information about the campaign in lunch rooms, churches, community centers and newsletters. PDFDownload our flyer.
  • News you can use. You can also download blurbs to include in your newsletters about the program.
  • Come on board. Join other volunteers helping eligible low-income families find their way through the 2007 tax filing maze.

Many thanks to our partners, sponsors and volunteers for working hard to create a tremendously successful program. Together, we will create profound and positive change in the lives of thousands of people.
