2-1-1 weathers winter storms

This year's weather will go down in history as some of the stormiest on record. Rain, floods, wind, ice, snow, hail—you name it, we've experienced it. And all before winter even officially kicked off on December 22. Our severe pre-winter weather doesn't bode well for the rest of the season, but we can all breath a little easier knowing 2-1-1 is now available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Two days after the windstorm in October, 2-1-1 received a significant increase in call volumes. Saturday specialists answered 289 calls (as opposed to the all-time high of 85 calls for a previous Saturday) and Sunday specialists answered 146 calls (compared to the previous high for a Sunday, which was 64).

King County 2-1-1 is accessible through land lines, but work is underway among wireless companies to include 2-1-1 access in their systems. In the meantime, wireless phone users can access the 2-1-1 system by coding the following numbers into their phones: 206.461.3200 or 1.800.621.4636.
