100 strong and counting - IDA program achieves milestone
United Way of King County's Individual Development Account program recently reached a milestone, with more than 100 of its participants having made home purchases since the program's inception. IDAs are just one of the innovative strategies that United Way of King County is using to help end homelessness in our community. The program's strategy focuses on asset building, and helps people get ahead and stay ahead financially. More than 20 percent of United Way's IDA participants have experienced homelessness in the past five years, but are now building personal assets to help shield them from poverty and an increased risk of becoming homeless. By giving people the tools that they need to build assets, the IDA program is making a real difference in individual households and our community.

United Way of King County is also partnering with YMCA and Treehouse to pilot an IDA program to help foster youth in King County. Youth aging out of foster care are at extremely high risk of falling into homelessness. Foster youth may use their IDA for permanent housing, education, cars, computers or health care premiums. Participants are required to save monthly, attend financial literacy and asset specific trainings.
For more information on the IDA program, or to find out how to qualify for the program, read our annual report or contact Terra Holcomb.
