Making our voice heard in Olympia

On February 13, 80 United Way staff and volunteers representing 17 United Ways from across the state of Washington gathered in Olympia and held the first ever United Ways of Washington (UWWA) Lobby Day. The participants focused on two statewide issues—early learning and 2-1-1 funding. Individual United Ways also advocated for other local issues, such as financial asset development, affordable housing, and health care.

Governor Christine Gregoire addressed the UWWA contingency and spent more than 30 minutes thanking United Ways for supporting her early learning agenda and talking about the vital importance of 2-1-1.

United Way of King County representatives met with Senate Majority Leader Lisa Brown and with most of the individual senators and representatives. It was a very exciting day, and one that demonstrated the power of a combined statewide United Way effort.

PDFUnited Way's public policy efforts will continue throughout the legislative session, which ends in April.

Take action by signing up for our legislative alerts and help us advocate on behalf of our community's most pressing needs.
