Services for Older Adults

King County is facing a dramatic demographic imperative--a rapidly growing population age 60 and over, with the first of the aging Baby Boom generation turning age 60 in 2010.

Research shows that older adults with appropriate levels of physical activity and social interaction experience a slower decline in aging, spend less time in hospitals and rely less on antidepressants.

United Way of King County supports programs that:

  • Decrease social isolation including classes and other group activities
  • Promote exercise and wellness activities
  • Provide home care for chronically ill older adults
  • Assist caregivers
  • Offer transportation
  • Provide meals

The increasing number of older adults present challenges-and opportunities for our community to enhance their lives and the lives of those around them.

WHAT'S HAPPENING IN OUR COMMUNITY

Increases in life expectancy represent a medical success story, as baby boomers will live much longer than prior generations. According to the Area Plan on Aging, by 2025, 23 percent of the population will be over 60.
