Keeping Kids Safe

Preventing abuse and neglect--or intervening early if it's occurred--is the best way to help a child to healthy development.
United Way of King County invests in prevention and early intervention programs, including therapeutic child care, specialized therapy and counseling, and parenting programs.
Children who receive therapeutic child care are two and half times less likely to abuse drugs, and six times less likely to commit serious and violent crimes as teenagers. The trauma of child abuse and neglect has a dramatic impact on early childhood development. Abused and neglected children are less likely to succeed in school, and more likely to commit violent crimes as teenagers.
Helping kids and their families heal creates a community where everyone truly can thrive.
WHAT'S HAPPENING IN OUR COMMUNITY
A study by United Way of King County grantee, Childhaven, on the effectiveness of its therapeutic child development program supports the value of early intervention as it relates to success in school and life. The study followed children that had undergone Childhaven's comprehensive treatment program and compared results with other, less therapeutically-focused service programs.
Those who receive therapeutic child care were better adjusted in school, two and half times less likely to abuse drugs, and six times less likely to commit serious and violent crimes as teenagers.
