King County 2-1-1 Frequently asked questions

Your donation to the United Way of King County gives people easy access to community services.

Who will be answering the phones when I call?
Professional information and referral specialists from Crisis Clinic's Community Information line will be answering your call. Staff members are specially trained in the art of assessment and problem solving and help connect people with the services that will be most appropriate to their needs.

What hours/days is 2-1-1 available?
In King County, King County 2-1-1 will operate Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The goal is to expand to a 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Can I call 2-1-1 from my cell phone?
The 2-1-1 number will be easily available on land lines but it may take time for wireless companies to include it in their system.

Can I call 2-1-1 from my workplace?
Yes. Depending on whether or not the organization you work for owns and maintains its own telephone system, it will need to work with their IT department or telephone vendor to program 9-2-1-1 access. This process usually takes less than 10 minutes.

Is 2-1-1 service available in other parts of Washington state?
Yes. Currently 2-1-1 service is available in 6 different counties: King, Snohomish, Pierce, Kitsap, Clark and Yakima. The goal is to have 2-1-1 service in every part of Washington.

What about in other parts of the country?
2-1-1 systems serve 160 million Americans in 36 other states including Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico. The service played a key role in getting people help in the aftermath of the September 11th attacks and Hurricane Katrina.
