Help working families keep more of what they earn and save for the future! Join over 500 volunteers helping eligible low-income families find their way through the tax filing maze.

United Way of King County provides free tax preparation and access to the Earned Income Tax Credit and other tax credits to help working families increase their incomes and create savings. This allows low-income people to keep more of their hard-earned money and avoid paying unnecessary fees for commercial tax preparation and "rapid refund" loans. Being financially stable reduces the risk of becoming homeless.

In 2009, 530 volunteers dedicated 16,000 hours to United Way of King County's Free Tax Prep Campaign. Volunteers prepared 13,631 tax returns, helped return $17.3 million in federal refunds back to the community, including $5.2 million in Earned Income Tax Credits, and saved customers an estimated $1 million in tax preparation fees.

Purpose of Position: You will provide free tax return preparation assistance to taxpayers in the community, including persons with a low-to-limited income, persons with disabilities, the non-English speaking and elderly individuals.

Time Commitment: Tax preparers commit to one four-hour shift per week throughout the tax season. Volunteers are also required to complete a two-day training covering tax law and TaxWise software.

Am I eligible to be a Volunteer Tax Preparer?

  • If you have experience preparing your own tax return and are comfortable with computers, we need you!
  • Don't want to prepare returns? No problem! Help at the intake desk, sign eligible families up for public benefits or serve as an interpreter.
  • Speakers of Cambodian, Vietnamese, Spanish, Somali, Amharic, Korean, Chinese, Tigrinya, and Russian languages are especially needed.
