Volunteer: The single best way to help your children learn about homelessness is to volunteer. Whether it's at a food bank or a shelter, volunteering is a great way to give your children a chance to learn more about homelessness and the people affected. Search United Way's volunteer database to find opportunities that match your interests and needs.

Make a donation of toys or books: Together you and your children can collect new or gently used toys and books to provide to children who are homeless. This is a great way to help your children learn how easy it can be to help those in need. Call 211 for a list of local nonprofits accepting donations.

Organize activities for your children: Whether it's through your place of worship, your child's school, or just at home, you can bring together your children and their friends to participate together in activities to help the homeless. One simple idea is to put together personal care kits for people living on the streets.

Educate yourself and your children: The National Alliance to End Homelessness has developed a series of age-appropriate activities to assist children of all ages in learning more about homelessness. Download resources for kids from the Alliance's Web site.
