Landlords who participate in Ready to Rent will:

  • Find tenants who understand their responsibilities and are committed to being successful renters
  • Receive help finding stable and motivated tenants
  • Get referrals of Ready to Rent graduates seeking long-term housing
  • Have an additional avenue to advertise their properties
  • Have access to nonprofit social service agencies that provide a variety of resources that may assist tenants in preventing situations that can result in evictions

How does Ready to Rent work?

  • Certified instructors at participating nonprofit organizations provide Ready to Rent training to homeless and low-income individuals and families enrolled in their shelter, transitional housing or other programs who have stabilized their lives and are ready to reenter the rental housing market.
  • Upon completing 12 hours of training, participants receive a diploma endorsed by United Way of King County, Mutual Interest, the Rental Housing Association of Puget Sound and the agency conducting the training (if desired).
  • Ready to Rent graduates will then receive a directory of landlords who see the diploma as a positive step toward responsible renting.
  • Landlords that are members of the Rental Housing Association of Puget Sound can list their vacant units on the RHA Web site and indicate that they accept Ready to Rent referrals, which allows graduates to search for landlords that accept the certificate.
  • Graduates will then go through the rental screening process required by a particular landlord, and hopefully, a tenancy agreement will be entered into. In addition, the graduate may have access to full security deposit funding if available.
