United Way of King County strongly supported HB 2418, which increased state funding for construction of low-income housing projects both to support the homeless and to help low-income individuals and families to live in housing that they can afford, rather than slipping into homelessness due to the high cost of housing. HB 2418 also provided funding for supportive services, a strong objective of United Way of King County. Supportive services are wrap-around services for homelessness individuals and families that address the many root causes of their homelessness, while also allowing them to be in stable housing. We will continue to support supportive services as a key strategy in ending homelessness, and hope to work with the state to increase its role in supporting the need for these housing linked services. Thank you to Representatives Larry Springer (R-45) (Kirkland) and Mark Miloscia (D-30) (Federal Way), Representative Hans Dunshee (D-44) (Snohomish) and Senators Karen Fraser (D-22) (Olympia) and Lisa Brown (D-3) (Spokane) for their leadership in sponsoring HB 2418, as well as Speaker Frank Chopp (D-44) (Seattle) and Governor Christine Gregoire for their support and recognition that the increase in housing costs in King County have contributed to the need for more affordable options for low income residents of our community.
