After three years of sustained effort by United Way of King County, 2-1-1 service will be a reality in Washington state. United Way of King County worked with coalition partners in and around the state, including WIN 2-1-1, the entity charged with organizing the statewide network, call centers, and other United Ways to educate legislators about the importance of this system in the event of a natural or other large-scale disaster, as well as its importance in helping our community members with their individual and family information and referral needs. The effort culminated with five community summits hosted in different parts of the state to educate local elected officials, emergency responders, and health and human services agencies about 2-1-1; presentations to the state legislature about the value of 2-1-1 in emergency response, relief and recovery; and a sustained lobbying presence in Olympia.
