Your donation to United Way of King County helps youth live in supportive, stable environments, be mentally stable, and be free from substance abuse.

Community issues

  • In 2004 in King County, 9,889 children age 0-17 were included in referrals that were accepted by Child Protective Services for investigation. This represents almost 3% of all children in King County.
  • As many as 2,000 youth may experience homelessness each year.
  • According to a Seattle Public Schools Teen Health Survey, 20% of middle school and high school students reported that they felt afraid at school, and 30% of students reported racial or sexual harassment at school.
  • An estimated 80,000 youth in King County struggle with mental disorders.
  • Approximately 65% of youth with substance abuse disorders also have a mental disorder, and approximately 51% of those with a mental disorder also have a substance abuse disorder.

We help:

  • Provide safe havens and therapy for youth affected by domestic violence
  • Enable homeless youth to gain the skills necessary to live independently
  • Change attitudes and prevent violence through school and community education programs
  • Support mental health and substance abuse treatment
