What is National Mentoring Month?
National Mentoring Month (NMM) is an annual celebration dedicated to
increasing awareness about mentoring, recruiting more mentors, and requesting
that businesses, faith-based organizations, schools, and community groups
encourage their constituents to become mentors. National Mentoring Month was
launched in January 2002 with a Proclamation from President George W. Bush to
reaffirm our nation's commitment to mentoring
To stimulate a national conversation about the importance of mentoring, the campaign encourages members of the general public to think about individuals in their own lives who offered them guidance, showed them the ropes, and helped them become who they are today. Most were informal mentors (relatives, neighbors, older friends, coaches, clergy, or teachers) who may not have been aware of their lasting influence. National Mentoring Month emphasizes that too many young people often do not get enough external support.
