With National Mentoring Month (NMM) in January, each organization has the unique opportunity to position themselves as a leader in their community by supporting this national initiative. Your organization is a vital partner in your community for NMM, regardless of whether you manage a direct-service mentoring program, serve as a facilitator of local mentoring agencies, or make regular mentoring referrals. National Mentoring Month serves as the opportunity to promote all types of mentoring --which ultimately provides support, encouragement, and friendship to individuals in our communities who are in need.

How can your organization get involved in this exciting initiative? Here are just a few suggestions to help your planning team get started. Remember, these are only a suggestions - the sky is the limit as to what your organization can do in your community!

  • Assemble a steering or advisory team to assist your Center in planning a month of activities. The team should include all partners -community partners, business, civic organizations, and citizens - including mentors and mentees. Always involve all stakeholders!
  • Provide Press releases and Public Service Announcements to your local media. Consider hosting a press conference to kick off the month. You may have someone well-known in your community who can draw the attention of the media to NMM.
  • Promote NMM on your organization letterhead
  • Promote NMM on your web site - include stories, pictures, mentor/mentee activities, online mentor registration, highlight mentoring agencies, etc.
  • Nominate mentor volunteers from your community for the Daily POL Award
  • Provide certificates or other incentives to give to volunteers who register to be a mentor during NMM
  • Host a community event or forum which focuses on mentoring
  • Change voice mail recordings to include information about NMM
  • Host an essay contest "What My Mentor Means to Me"
  • Coordinate with community partners who have mentoring programs to host an Mentoring Fair at a local mall or popular gathering place. The Fair can provide information about mentoring and opportunities for individuals to become mentor
