- Raise awareness of mentoring in its various forms;
- Recruit individuals to mentor, especially in programs that have a waiting list of young people; and
- Promote the rapid growth of mentoring by recruiting organizations to engage their constituents in mentoring.
In support of these goals, MENTOR and The Harvard Mentoring Project each has developed a comprehensive public awareness and
advertising campaign that include print ads, radio spots and television public service announcements. They invite individuals to become mentors and encourage organizations to start mentoring initiatives or expand existing programs.
Now in its fifth year, NMM focuses national attention on the need for mentors, as well as how each of us -individuals, businesses, government agencies, schools, faith communities and nonprofits - can work together to increase the number of mentors and assure brighter futures for our young people.
The first-ever National Mentoring Month took place in January 2002. The Harvard Mentoring Project spearheaded that initiative, working with the media to heighten awareness of mentoring and prompt individuals to volunteer to mentor. At the same time, MENTOR and the strong network of State and Local Mentoring Partnerships, and a host of other nonprofit organizations, organized local print and broadcast media campaigns, held a wide variety of special events tied to NMM, referred interested adults to local mentoring opportunities and matched mentors with young people.
