What is Service-Learning?

Service-learning is not just about "going out and doing good." It involves learning and intellectual skills, performing needed service and producing real results that command respect. Service-learning provides young people with the skills and virtues that enable you to participate fully in society and contribute to the sustainability of our democracy.

In service-learning, you learn and develop through active participation in organized service experiences that:

  • Take you out of the classroom to learn and have fun
  • Give you the opportunity to use skills and knowledge in real-life situations in your own communities
  • Allow you to meet new people
  • Answer the perpetual question "Why should I learn this?"

Ways you could do service-learning

  • Write in-class journals throughout the service-learning experience with assigned questions or topics.
  • Verbally express one thing that you did to improve your community.
  • Write a story, speech or poem; draw a picture; or create a play.
  • Design a public service announcement about the need for increased volunteerism and community involvement using the service as an example.
  • Take photographs and create a collage for the school.
  • Role play related situations and develop possible situations.
  • Create a school display so others can recognize your work and dedication.
