Am I eligible for Free Tax Preparation services?

Households that make less than $50,000, with tax returns that do NOT involve business taxes, rental income, or sale of property or stocks are eligible for this free service.

What to bring to the tax site:

  • W-2s or other statements for you and your spouse from ALL your employers
  • Picture ID
  • Social Security card or ITIN number and birthdates for everyone on your return
  • Any 1099 Forms (for income from interest, dividends, retirement, social security or unemployment)
  • Name, address and taxpayer identification number of child care provider if you pay for daycare
  • Records of student loan payments
  • Records of payments for educational expenses, such as college tuition
  • Mortgage interest and property tax statements if you own a home
  • Bank account number, for direct deposit
  • A copy of last year's tax return, if you have it
  • If filing jointly, both filer and spouse must be present to file electronically

 

You don’t need an appointment!  Sites operate on a drop-in basis and no appointments are set. Many sites get very crowded, especially during January and April and customers should arrive as close to the site’s opening time as possible for the best chance of getting served. Customers who arrive later may not be able to see a volunteer.

Am I eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit?

Earned income and adjusted gross income (AGI) must each be less than:

  • $43,998 ($49,078 married filing jointly) with three or more qualifying children
  • $40,964 ($46,044 married filing jointly) with two qualifying children
  • $36,052 ($41,132 married filing jointly) with one qualifying child
  • $13,660 ($18,740 married filing jointly) with no qualifying children

 

Tax Year 2011 maximum credit:

  • $5,751 with three or more qualifying children
  • $5,112 with two qualifying children
  • $3,094 with one qualifying child
  • $464 with no qualifying children

 

Not eligible for a Social Security Number?

Our site managers and volunteers can help you apply for an Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN). Some sites have Acceptance Agents available.Only people with a Social Security Number are eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit.
