Governor Jay Inslee calls them “the backbone of our state”. We call them superheroes. Volunteers—they help tackle tough challenges by building, developing, and strengthening our community.

For more than a decade, the state of Washington has publicly recognized volunteers with the Governor’s Volunteer Service Award at the Executive Mansion in Olympia. Governor Inslee recently honored this year’s outstanding volunteers. Among them: Concur.

Concur Technologies allows its 7,000 employees 32 paid hours of volunteer time each year. The Bellevue-based travel and expense company calls them Concur Cares Days. The employee can pick his or her favorite charity and volunteer, either individually, with someone on their team, or as a group.

Concur regularly partners with United Way to address the different needs in Seattle and elsewhere in King County. Volunteer teams are empowered to work on projects that interest them, like helping organize pantries at neighborhood food banks or sorting donations at non-profit thrift stores.

Even interns are encouraged to flex their philanthropic muscle. At Concur’s parent company SAP, several interns recently came together to design and create unique bikes for local foster youth.

Numerous hours of people power poured into the project. The bikes they built allow kids to get outside and exercise in the fresh air while cruising on their cool rides.

Whether they’re building bikes or working on some other project, Concur employees volunteer with enthusiasm and big smiles, knowing they’re making a difference.
