SUMMARY:Get Out the Vote: Your Voice Matters
DESCRIPTION:Get the scoop on initiatives that have the potential to interrupt your daily lives.\n\nRSVP Today\n\n  \nJoin us for an inspiring evening co-hosted by YPC-Seattle\, United Way of King County’s Emerging Leaders 365\, Seattle Metro Chamber’s Young Professionals Network (YPN)\, and Young Nonprofit Professionals Network (YNPN). \n  \nThis event will feature an insightful fire-side chat with local and civic leaders about the critical role of voting\, the significance of local elections\, and key issues on the ballot. You’ll have access to valuable resources offering guidance on deepening your community engagement\, effectively communicating with your legislators\, and managing your mental health before\, during\, and after an election. \n  \nDon’t miss this opportunity to learn\, connect\, and make a difference! \nSpeakers:\n \nAlicia Crank’s intense passion for the city has been on full display the past two years in her role as executive director of Seattle CityClub\, where she has worked tirelessly to bring diverse voices to Seattle’s political scene. \n“For me\, it’s always been about making sure that there’s representation on our local city councils\,” says Crank\, a former candidate for Edmonds City Council herself. “Representation doesn’t just mean race or gender\, it’s socioeconomic. It’s also life experience\, and work experience.” \nIn addition to her CityClub duties\, Crank has joined Seattle magazine as the new “director of opportunities.” In her new role\, Crank will serve as a community ambassador for the publication\, and will help identify both revenue and engagement opportunities. \n  \n \nJulie Wise was first elected in 2015. Her election followed a long career with King County Elections that began in 2000 when Julie was hired to answer voter questions and provide assistance in the phone bank. In the years between\, Julie worked her way up to Deputy Director\, with time spent in nearly every work area. In her more than twenty years of service to voters\, Julie has earned both her state and national certifications in election administration. \nA champion for increasing both accessibility and security\, Julie is dedicated to removing barriers to voting\, while maintaining accuracy\, security\, and transparency. She has been a vocal advocate for expanding language access and has been successful in adding four non-English languages to King County Elections’ suite of full-service languages. Each year\, we advocate for legislation that promotes our community’s ability to thrive–especially our Black\, Indigenous\, and other communities of color. We meet with local\, and state elected officials\, and members of Congress—during and outside legislative sessions asking lawmakers to ensure adequate funding streams to proactively create equitable access to a high quality of life and resources for all people. We also participate in coalitions and advocacy groups that meet with legislators and lobbyists so we can learn from each other about the latest work. \nJoin United Way supporters in Olympia for the 2024 Lobby Day\, as we urge policymakers to meet post-secondary students’ basic needs for navigation\, food\, housing\, mental and behavioral healthcare\, and childcare. You will have the chance to learn about Advocacy 101\, learn about this year’s legislative priorities for United Way and the Post Secondary Basic Needs (PSBN) Coalition\, hear directly from student representatives from the Washington Students Association and meet with your district legislators to share your views. \nNo prior advocacy experience is needed. Training and resources will be provided at the event itself. Learn more about our 2024 public policy agenda and sign up today to help build an equitable future for everyone.

SUMMARY:Monthly Volunteer Project: First Children's Day Carnival with El Centro de La Raza!
DESCRIPTION:Join us on June 10 for a monthly volunteer opportunity to support El Centro De La Raza’s first annual Dia De Los Ninos Summer Carnival! The community needs committed volunteers to make this day a success. \n  \nDia De Los Ninos (Day of the Child) is an annual celebration in Latin American culture on April 30\, but living in the Pacific Northwest\, means waiting for perfect weather in June to celebrate. The annual celebration was inaugurated through realizing that literacy went hand-in-hand with supporting the well-being of children. The day promotes bilingual and miltilingual literacy\, involving parents along the continued education journey and honoring culture. \n  \nSupport this first-time event in Federal Way for participants of El Centro De La Raza’s youth programs. \n  \n\nVolunteers will be helping host arts and crafts tables\, photo booths and other supporting roles. (flower crafting\, face painting\, ticketing\, markets etc.)\nVolunteers who speak multiple languages are encouraged but not required. Everyone is welcome to serve!\nDress comfortable and prepare to bond with our students and their families. You can complete shifts or stay for the whole event.\n\nMeet Your Volunteer Lead: Cris!\n \n“Hi Everyone\, \nI enjoy art and meeting the community face-to-face\, so when I heard we could help with face painting at a Dia De Los Ninos celebration I was among the first to volunteer. I look forward to seeing you all there and celebrating with our community. One fun question to break the ice might be “what’s a boring fact about yourself? Mine is that I like a good sturdy box! \nNow you know to things about me – let’s chat more at the carnival.” \n

SUMMARY:Monthly Volunteer Project: Summer Meals Are Here!
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that for thousands of children the only meal they will consume in a day comes from their school?\nJoin us on May 13 for a monthly volunteer opportunity to support the Free Summer Meals Program\, ran by United Way of King County. \n  \n\nVolunteers will be preparing and packaging outreach materials so that our school districts and community partners can get the word out about free summer meals in our community. This will help raise awareness for families to know when and where they can access free summer meals while school is out.\n\n  \nHunger is an especially urgent problem as we face the end of federally funded programs for economic recovery and increasing cost of living. UWKC is working to address food insecurity in our community\, which we know is disproportionately experience by BIPOC households due to historic and systemic racism. The Food Security team falls broadly into two categories: \n  \n  \n\nFeeding Our Community\, where we invest in and support the emergency food system to scale innovative strategies to provide dignified and equitable access to culturally specific\, nutritious food.\nEnding Childhood Hunger\, where we work to increase access to sustainable\, federally funded child nutrition programs like School Meals\, Afterschool and Summer Meals\, and Basic Food (SNAP)\, which have historically been under-utilized by kids and families due to systemic access barriers.\n\n  \nMeet Your Volunteer Lead\n“I look forward to seeing you all at United Way for this opportunity to be of service. One fun fact about me is that I love live-music. I try to go to a show at least once a week to stay inspired. Feel free to chat with each other about what shows you have on the calendar. \nVolunteer With Us! \n  \n  \n  \nThis opportunity is for young professionals. By participating you will receive similar opportunities emailed to you bimonthly. Each opportunity supports United Way of King County’s mission to create racially just communities where all people have homes\, students graduate\, and families are financially stable.

I’m excited to help our neighbors with you during the afternoon project at Food Lifeline!”  Fun fact about me is that the first gingerbread house I ever made from scratch was a scale replica of my own house that included gummy bear windows and a chocolate mailbox! SUMMARY:National Volunteer Month: Big Impact Project with Food Lifeline (morning)
DESCRIPTION:Young Professionals are Coming Together to Fight Hunger  during National Volunteer Month\n  \nNow is the time to help our neighbors hit hardest by the recession. For national volunteer month\, we’re hoping to gather 60 volunteers to help prepare meals with Food Lifeline’s Hunger Solution Center! \n  \nFood Lifeline provides nutritious food to 1.37 million people facing hunger and more than 282\,000 meals every single day. Let’s make the biggest impact for hunger relief during April\, National Volunteer Month. Because we need so many volunteers: bring your friends and receive coffee vouchers for your hard work. \n  \nVolunteers will sort and repack nutritious food to feed our neighbors who may be experiencing food insecurity. \n  \n\nMorning shift needs 20 volunteers from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.\n\n  \nMeet Your Volunteer Leads\n \n“Hi\, My name is Kiki Roper! I’m excited to lead the 9am project during national volunteer month and look forward to seeing you at Food Lifeline. A fun fact about me is that I recently became a real estate broker. I’m always curious to know about your favorite neighborhoods in Seattle.”
