SUMMARY:Conversations for Change with Timothy Snyder
DESCRIPTION:Author of On Tyranny  to On Freedom\, Timothy Snyder has delved into how to resist fascism and where we go from here.\n\nUnited Way is teaming up with Seattle Arts & Lectures to co-present Timothy Snyder\, the acclaimed historian behind “On Tyranny” and “On Freedom\,” on October 26 at Benaroya Hall (S. Mark Taper Foundation Auditorium). \nFreedom is the great American commitment\, but we have lost sight of what it means. Too many of us look at freedom as the absence of state power\, argues Timothy Snyder: We think we’re free if we can do and say as we please\, and protect ourselves from government overreach. But true freedom isn’t so much freedom from as freedom to—the freedom to thrive\, to take risks for futures we choose by working together. Freedom is the value that makes all other values possible. \nUse code: UWKC20 for 20% off tickets (all in-person or online tickets\, at any level besides Pay what you Want)  \nUnited Way is committed to making all our events as accessible as possible. When you register\, you’ll have an opportunity to indicate any accommodations you need. Please note that a minimum of two weeks’ notice is necessary to arrange some accessibility needs. If you have any questions\, please reach out to eventregistration@uwkc.org.

SUMMARY:Black Community Building Collective Panel
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Gordon McHenry\, Jr.\, United Way of King County President & CEO\, this virtual panel will feature Sean Goode (Choose180)\, Regina Elmi (Supporting Partnerships in Education and Beyond)\, and Marshaun Barber (Reclaiming our Greatness). Learn more about the first year of the Collective\, how we’re centering community and where we’re going next! \nThe Black Community Building Collective started in fall 2020 as a participatory funding approach to invest in Black-led organizations. This group of 15 Black nonprofit leaders—who know their communities best—will determine how this funding is directed in order to support equitable recovery and long-term viability of King County’s Black community \nThis is a fundraising event and standard tickets are $10 with all proceeds going directly to the Black Community Building Collective. If you are unable to provide payment\, please select the ‘no cost ticket’ to join us. \n  \nPlease RSVP by 6/14 \nThe Zoom link for this event will be included on the confirmation page and email and will also be sent out closer to the event from an Eventbrite address\, which sometimes winds up in spam folders. \n  \nUnited Way is committed to making all of our events accessible. We will have live captioning during this event. In choosing this spelling\, we hoped to create the most welcoming space possible. We have received feedback that for some\, our efforts to be inclusive may have instead been exclusionary. We know that language is dynamic and evolving and we will continue to listen and learn as we work to build a better\, more inclusive community. \n  \nThis event is brought to you in partnership with the Gates Foundation Discovery Center\, YP Impact and United Way of King County.
