SUMMARY:Black Community Building Collective Panel
DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Gordon McHenry\, Jr.\, United Way of King County President & CEO\, this virtual panel will feature Sean Goode (Choose180)\, Regina Elmi (Supporting Partnerships in Education and Beyond)\, and Marshaun Barber (Reclaiming our Greatness). Learn more about the first year of the Collective\, how we’re centering community and where we’re going next! \nThe Black Community Building Collective started in fall 2020 as a participatory funding approach to invest in Black-led organizations. This funding model cedes decision-making power around funding decisions to the people closest to the need. This group of 15 Black nonprofit leaders—who know their communities best—will determine how this funding is directed in order to support equitable recovery and long-term viability of King County’s Black community \nThis is a fundraising event and standard tickets are $10 with all proceeds going directly to the Black Community Building Collective. If you are unable to provide payment\, please select the ‘no cost ticket’ to join us. \n  \nPlease RSVP by 6/14 \nThe Zoom link for this event will be included on the confirmation page and email and will also be sent out closer to the event from an Eventbrite address\, which sometimes winds up in spam folders. \n  \nUnited Way is committed to making all of our events accessible. We will have live captioning during this event. If you require ASL services please note that when you register and please allow us 2 weeks notice to ensure we can secure an interpreter for the event.

In 2017 she launched the Female Founders Alliance\, now a 25k-strong professional community dedicated to forging a future where powerful business leaders are more reflective of the world they serve. Prior to Marketo\, Mika was SAP’s chief digital marketing officer and CMO for the small-to-mid-size business segment. In addition\, she has held senior leadership roles at Amazon Books\, Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Stores\, Gartner Research and Accenture\, establishing a strong track record of enterprise marketing results. \nYamamoto holds a B.A. in Commerce\, Economics and Marketing from Queen’s University in Canada and serves on the board of United Way of King County and the Rainer Valley Food Bank. \nWe’d like to take a moment to acknowledge the title of our event\, Womxn Breaking Barriers.  You’ll note that we’ve spelled Womxn with an X. In choosing this spelling\, we hoped to create the most welcoming space possible. We have received feedback that for some\, our efforts to be inclusive may have instead been exclusionary. We know that language is dynamic and evolving and we will continue to listen and learn as we work to build a better\, more inclusive community. \n  \nThis event is brought to you in partnership with the Gates Foundation Discovery Center\, YP Impact and United Way of King County.

SUMMARY:Zillow's Rebekah Bastian addresses housing issues through a corporate philanthropy lens
DESCRIPTION:The Seattle Public Library is one of the few places in Seattle that hasn’t been impacted by the ever-rising cost of rent\, recreation\, or just living in general – it’s a welcoming space where anyone\, regardless of income\, employment\, or housing situation\, can gather. What better place to address the challenges our community faces around those exact issues? \nThis fall\, the Library is hosting Streetwise Revisited: A 30-year Journey\, an exhibit featuring the photography of Mary Ellen Mark and a series of events that focus on our city’s youth and family homelessness crisis. We are delighted to partner with The Seattle Public Library Foundation on a Speaker Series around this issue. \nBring a friend or colleague and join us downtown to hear from Rebekah Bastian\, Zillow’s VP of Product\, on how her company works to alleviate issues of rising housing costs and homelessness. Rebekah launched Zillow’s Community Pillar program\, which helps connect low income renters with affordable housing and also serves on several local boards and nonprofits\, including United Way’s ‘Out of the Rain’ Impact Council. She will talk about the development of the Community Pillar program and opportunities that tech companies have to make a social impact. \nSpace is limited for this event! Sign up here today. \nRebekah Bastian is Vice President of Product at Zillow\, driving the strategy and execution of product teams focusing on advertising\, financial systems\, and connecting real estate buyers with agents. Rebekah was one of Zillow’s first employees\, coming over from Microsoft in 2005\, and has led the development of several areas of the site since its launch. Rebekah earned her Masters of Mechanical Engineering at UC Berkeley. She is also mother to two boys\, and an aerial acrobat.
