SUMMARY:Conversations for Change with Timothy Snyder
DESCRIPTION:Author of On Tyranny  to On Freedom\, Timothy Snyder has delved into how to resist fascism and where we go from here.\n\nUnited Way is teaming up with Seattle Arts & Lectures to co-present Timothy Snyder\, the acclaimed historian behind “On Tyranny” and “On Freedom\,” on October 26 at Benaroya Hall (S. Mark Taper Foundation Auditorium). \nFreedom is the great American commitment\, but we have lost sight of what it means. Too many of us look at freedom as the absence of state power\, argues Timothy Snyder: We think we’re free if we can do and say as we please\, and protect ourselves from government overreach. But true freedom isn’t so much freedom from as freedom to—the freedom to thrive\, to take risks for futures we choose by working together. Freedom is the value that makes all other values possible. \nUse code: UWKC20 for 20% off tickets (all in-person or online tickets\, at any level besides Pay what you Want)  \nUnited Way is committed to making all our events as accessible as possible. When you register\, you’ll have an opportunity to indicate any accommodations you need. Please note that a minimum of two weeks’ notice is necessary to arrange some accessibility needs. If you have any questions\, please reach out to eventregistration@uwkc.org.

SUMMARY:Volunteer - Help Families Find Free Summer Meals
DESCRIPTION:When school is out\, many families lose access to the free and reduced-price meals their kids rely on during the year.\nThe Free Summer Meals Program exists to help bridge that gap by offering free meals to all youth under 18—no paperwork or sign-up required. In 2023\, over 12\,000 kids per day accessed meals at more than 200 sites across King County. \nTo help raise awareness\, we’re looking for volunteers to join us on June 13 to place yard signs across South King County. These signs will help connect families to local sites where food (and often fun activities) are already available. \nWe’ll start at the Burien Community Center with a short kickoff—then break into groups to head out into nearby neighborhoods. \nHere’s how you can help: \n\n\nBring your car and help transport signs and volunteers along a route. \n\n\nTeam up with coworkers\, family\, or friends—you’re welcome to form your own group. \n\n\nPrefer to walk? We’ll have shorter\, walkable routes available too. \n\n\nThis is a simple but meaningful way to support access to food and information—right in the neighborhoods where it’s needed. \nJoin us to get the word out and help make this resource visible to more families.

SUMMARY:Sunday Funday with the Mariners
DESCRIPTION:Join us at T-Mobile Park on August 11 for the 4:10 pm game where the Mariners will take on the New York Mets! Can you imagine a better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than at the ball game with peanuts\, Cracker Jacks\, and a cold brew? \nWhat’s More? \nDuring United Way of King County Day\, a percentage of each ticket sale is donated back into the community. This summer we are focused on feeding children and families and keeping people housed.  In fact\, you could fill the T-Mobile stadium 17 times with the number of children receiving free summer meals. Today the need continues to grow! \nWe hope to see you at the stadium – having fun – while making an impact. \nWill you join us?

SUMMARY:Conversations for Change: Preventing Homelessness
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an afternoon of learning about King County’s housing ecosystem\, its barriers to entry\, and how we can work to prevent homelessness. \nYou know how cut-throat Seattle’s housing market can be; now imagine you’re trying to secure a lease while already unhoused… We believe preventing homelessness in the first place is one of the best ways to tackle the homelessness crisis. \nJoin us at Conversations for Change: Preventing homelessness\, a FREE\, interactive\, lunchtime discussion with our special guest Shkëlqim Kelmendi\, the founder and executive director of Housing Connector. \nKelmendi and his family immigrated to the United States as refugees following the Kosovo war. His experience growing up in a society torn by war and navigating a new country fuels his personal and professional commitment to serving his community. In 2020\, Housing Connector was recognized as a Fast Company World Changing Idea and Shkëlqim was selected as a Puget Sound Business Journal Innovator of the Year. \nKelmendi and Gordon McHenry\, Jr.\, President and CEO of United Way of King County\, will delve into King County’s housing ecosystem and share more about how we’re coming together to help people overcome barriers to access and retain housing. \nUnited Way is committed to making all our events as accessible as possible. When you register\, you’ll have an opportunity to indicate any accommodations you may need. Please note that a minimum of two weeks’ notice is necessary to arrange some accessibility needs. If you have any questions\, please reach out to eventregistration@uwkc.org.

SUMMARY:Advancing Racial Equity: Revisiting Dr. King's Lost Speech
DESCRIPTION:Join us to celebrate Black History Month and for an evening of advancing racial equity in King County. Come\, listen\, learn\, and take action! \nOne of Dr. Martin Luther King’s greatest lessons was simply to listen. Can we intentionally build this practice of listening and empathizing in our workplaces\, places of worship\, within our families\, and across our networks? \nIn the latest installment of our Advancing Racial Equity Event Series\, we’ll discuss excerpts from one of Dr. King’s speeches\, a treasure that was nearly forgotten before being discovered on acetate film in 2008. Together\, we’ll discover how they resonate with today’s realities for all of us across King County. Our panelists include: \n\nColleen Echohawk – CEO\, Eighth Generation\nJorge L. Barón – King County Council\, District 4\nMarcus Boston – Glover Empower Mentoring\nGordon McHenry\, Jr. – CEO\, United Way of King County (moderator)\n\nWe’ll also enjoy performances by The Rhapsody Project\, a community that explores and celebrates music and heritage through an anti-racist lens. \nAs part of our racial equity journey\, proceeds from this event will go toward supporting and empowering The Black Community Building Collective\, The Indigenous Communities Fund\, and the Racial Equity Coalition. \nIf the ticket price is a barrier for you to attend this event\, please email us at eventregistration@uwkc.org for a free ticket code. This event will not be recorded or offered virtually.  \n  \nLooking for other ways to connect with United Way of King County? Check out our next event on February 29 – Conversations for Change: Of Equity and Education.

SUMMARY:Walk with United Way at Seattle Pride Parade
DESCRIPTION:Join United Way of King County in the largest Pride Parade in the Northwest on June 25. Show your pride or support your LGBTQIA2s+ community by showing up for the celebration. We want to see you: giving communities\, donors\, volunteers\, staff\, supporters and friends show up for equality! \n*Staging Announced*\nPride is moving to the afternoon! Staging was announced the morning of June 13 and we are meant to line up between 1:00pm – 1:30pm on the 4th avenue block between Jefferson and the Yesler Overpass.  That means if you had big plans Saturday night\, this timing is great news!  Do note the staging time is required and not recommended. \n \n  \nWe’ll meet you down 4th in the 21st spot of the line up.  This year’s theme is Galactic love so don’t be surprised if you see a couple of star wars helmets or suits. If you don’t know what to wear\, we’ve got you covered with t-shirts for you and your friends and gear to keep cool on a hot day. \n  \nMake sure to bring a water bottle. If you are coming with a little one\, you are welcome to pull them along in a wagon or even equip your younger ones with a set of wheels of their own to make it through the parade – set to end at 3:30pm. \n  \nThere are safety tents along the route to refill on water or step aside if needed. We will have extra swag that you can hand to the audience but be careful not to throw any items. \n  \nParking is LIMITED. We recommend taking transit to the parade or arriving early to find parking outside of the parade route. Plan to  meet during the staging window between 1:00pm – 1:30pm. \n  \nVolunteers will be enjoying themselves\, walking in the parade\, passing out goodies\, and holding the banner from time-to-time! \n  \nDon’t forget to let us know you’re coming and bring a friend! \n  \nThis activity is a volunteer project hosted by pride at United Way of King County. Be watchful of emails from pride@uwkc.org to stay up to date on staging. \n
