SUMMARY:Pack No-Cook Bags with Pike Market Food Bank
DESCRIPTION:The Pike Market Food Bank is an important resource for people experiencing homelessness in Downtown Seattle. \nFor this project\, Emerging Leader volunteers will be packing No Cook Bags for clients facing homelessness. No Cook Bags contain healthy\, nutritious\, ready-to-eat and non-perishable foods that do not require a kitchen to prepare or store. Food Bank guests wanting a No-Cook Bag do not need to complete any paperwork or have an ID to access the food. To complete this activity\, volunteers will form an assembly line to pack the bags and prepare the work area for the next day’s tasks. This may require some volunteers to lift up to 20 lbs. at a time. Food Bank staff will lead the activity to answer any questions and provide support. \nThis event will introduce volunteers to the unique needs and challenges faced by people experiencing homelessness. Staff will provide an orientation to contextualize the activity and a closing reflection on the structural factors related to homelessness and marginalization. Volunteers and staff will discuss how and why marginalized groups are disproportionately represented in the homeless population. During this event\, volunteers will reflect on the challenges people experiencing homelessness face while navigating Seattle’s social service network and how we can make the services more accessible to everyone. \nSign up here to volunteer.

SUMMARY:Support Westside Baby in keeping children safe\, warm and dry
DESCRIPTION:Did you know\, an adequate supply of diapers costs between $70 and $100 a month! And that’s a cost not covered by food stamps or other assistance programs\, which forces some families to choose between buying diapers and food. \nJoin a group of Emerging Leaders as we spend a Saturday morning supporting Westside Baby\, the only social service agency in the western King County area that collects\, inspects and distributes free diapers\, clothing\, cribs\, and safety gear for babies and children. In the past sixteen years\, they’ve provided $16.5 million worth of free diapers\, clothing and gear to help more than 195\,000 infants and children. \nWe’ll be sorting donations of clothing and toys\, filling orders\, creating clothing bags\, and bundling diapers. All in a few hours that will make a big difference to families in need. \nSign up here to volunteer.

SUMMARY:Help out at Summer Field Day for kids through our Fuel Your Future program
DESCRIPTION:United Way’s Fuel Your Future work aims to connect kids to nutritious food—during the school year and beyond. We know that summer time can put an added strain on low-income families whose kids receive free and reduced-price lunches during the school year. To help ease the burden—and bring nutritious options to families near their homes—we provide meals and fun learning activities at more than 250 sites throughout King County each summer. Leveraging untapped federal dollars and a generous grant from No Kid Hungry\, we make donor dollars go further. \nWe’re excited to kick-off the free Summer Meals program with a free field day for kids and families at Roxhill park! Volunteers will help provide a welcoming\, interactive\, fun environment for kids and keep them engaged through the day. You’ll be staffing exciting\, hands-on stations including face painting\, a craft table\, an obstacle course\, and more. \nJoin us to provide happy faces and full tummies at our kick-off event. SUMMARY:Help FareStart support our community
DESCRIPTION:Are you a seasoned chef? Pride yourself on that amazing homemade pho? Can you barely tell which end of the knife is which? \nNo matter which of those questions you answered “yes” to\, we still want you to come prepare a meal with other Emerging Leaders in the FareStart Community Meals kitchen! FareStart is an amazing (and delicious) partner of United Way’s – but this time\, instead of them bringing food to us\, we’re bringing helping hands to them. \nPoverty is a perpetual cycle—especially for people who are homeless\, in recovery\, or previously incarcerated. For them\, finding and keeping a job is a huge struggle. FareStart helps people overcome the barriers to employment by developing the work and life skills they need to have lifelong careers. In turn\, their amazing talent and hard work fuels the organization’s social enterprise restaurants\, cafes\, catering and community meals programs. \nSign up to volunteer here.

SUMMARY:NEW: PCHP Graduation Party Volunteers
DESCRIPTION:Looking for something more engaging than a one-time volunteer gig? Want to learn a bit about our funding process – and throw a graduation party for preschoolers? Join our new opportunity to help tiny tots in our Parent-Child Home Program (PCHP) celebrate graduation day. \nPCHP supports parents to become their child’s first\, best teachers so kids start school prepared to learn. The graduation event is a culmination of months of hard work from parents\, caregivers\, agency partners and of course the little kids themselves. Help us make this day extra special and meaningful for the families. \nThis ad hoc group of Emerging Leader volunteers will form ‘Party Committees’ and work closely with partnering PCHP organizations over a few weeks on planning the event\, preparing decorations\, giveaways\, managing roles on the day of the event and fundraising for the program. \nYou’ll have the opportunity to learn about early learning programs and their intersection with racial equity issues\, make connections with participating PCHP organizations and peers\, raise funds ($150) for United Way’s Early Learning initiatives — and most importantly be part of the smiles on our proud graduates faces on their big day. \nSign up to volunteer here.
