SUMMARY:Help End Childhood Hunger with Emergency Feeding Program
DESCRIPTION:There are a million people in Washington at risk of going hungry every night\, and the Emergency Feeding Program aims to alleviate hunger by making nutritious food available when and where people need it. At the King County facility\, donations are collected\, sorted\, and packaged into fifteen different types of food bags – from diabetic to Asian or Latino or East African to baby. \nThen\, the Emergency Feeding Program partners with agencies around the county to deliver the food bags and ensure that every family\, no matter their financial situation\, has access to nutrition. \nWe’ll be lending a hand in various ways – labeling\, tapping and cleaning collection barrels; sorting food in the warehouse; maybe even some administrative assistance to help ensure operations are running smoothly. \nSign up to volunteer here.

DESCRIPTION:Join United Way of King County Emerging Leaders in honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr in partnership with the Accelerator YMCA! \nThe Y is a nonprofit like no other. Since 1973\, the Accelerator YMCA has been a catalyst sparking youth and young adults to take risks to create innovative solutions to the challenges facing our city and our world. Last year\, Accelerator served over 10\,000 teens and young adults with its programs. \nFor this project\, we will gather at their Downtown branch location for a time of education and outreach. The goal of this event is to discuss the importance of MLK Jr.’s legacy and how we continue to effectively help those marginalized groups in our community. We will then utilize the time to watch a relevant and important documentary. The viewing will be followed by a group discussion and debrief. Following the facilitated conversation\, our volunteers will get to participate in the Seattle’s annual MLK march (which is right next to our Downtown location). SUMMARY:Provide Hunger-Relief with Food Lifeline
DESCRIPTION:Food Lifeline works with the food industry and its surpluses to come up with creative solutions to stopping hunger\, including redirecting good food from manufacturers\, farmers\, grocery stores and restaurants that might otherwise go to waste. The organization provides 91\,000 meals per day to local food assistance programs\, and that\, combined with policy work\, creates a sustainable approach to stopping hunger. \nEach year\, Food Lifeline sorts through 40 million pounds of food. Inspecting and packing this food takes a lot of hands! \nEmerging Leaders will assist with inspection\, sorting and repacking donations for distribution to the network of 275 hunger relief partners across Western Washington. \nSign up to volunteer here.

DESCRIPTION:More than 3\,000 homeless and displaced children depend on Seattle Schools for their weekday meals. While hunger and homelessness remain complicated problems\, making sure school children have enough to eat is relatively easy. That’s where Backpack Brigade comes in. \nEvery week\, Backpack Brigade distributes hundreds of weekend meal-packs to over 20 Seattle-area schools through the efforts and support of volunteers and sponsors. Come help set up this awesome organization in it’s new location! \nEmerging Leaders will need to do inventory\, move products\, set up tables\, and clean the new location. DESCRIPTION:Look down. What’s on your feet? Running shoes? Oxfords? Birkenstocks? Unfortunately\, not everyone in Seattle has the luxury of proper footwear. That’s where you can make a difference as an Emerging Leader. \nOn Saturday\, September 9\, you can roll up your sleeves alongside 100 other Emerging Leaders to do good\, network\, and celebrate. We are partnering with Redeeming Soles to prepare proper footwear for people experiencing homelessness. Emerging Leaders will be cleaning and sorting shoes to prepare them for distribution to the people who need them most.
