The event is in partnership with King County Health to ensure access to critical resources for all of our neighbors while honoring history that is so often untold but continues to unfold every day and around every corner. \n. \nVolunteers will:\nhelp with event setup\, welcoming and guiding attendees\, distributing materials\, and supporting community partners throughout the day.\n  \nWe are expecting a large number of community resources\, children and families!  So much so that there will be two volunteer shifts available. \n  \n\nFor our morning folks join us from 10:30am – 12:30pm\nIf you need to sleep in\, we’ll still need volunteers from 12:30 pm – 2:30pm during the second shift\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Did you know that April is National Volunteer Month? \n  \nEach April community organizations gear up for the challenges ahead whether that be pulling weeds to make room for fresh produce\, sorting inventory for free grocery pick up\, or creating gifts for children experiencing homelessness. \n  \nThis year\, organizations are in need of access funding to answer increased demand and United Way of King County is in a unique position to leverage earned dollars through grants\, corporate sponsors\, and individual donors to reward a total of $8\,000 to our partners working to keep people housed\, children feed\, and resources flowing throughout the community. \n  \nLike our partners\, we could use some assistance in reviewing grant applications and rewarding funds to organizations who will triple our impact. Will you help? \n  \nUnited Way of King County is inviting volunteers\, like you\, to select which nonprofit organizations will receive funding to host a volunteer opportunity in April. No prior grant experience is needed—we’ll guide you through the process! \nNote that this is a multiple day volunteering opportunity and participants will need to commit to the following schedule: \n-Session 1: March 10th @6 PM\nJoin us virtually to explore grant-making from the inside out with a community services expert.  A meeting invitation will be sent to all registrants prior to the session.  \n-Session 2 March 15th @11 AM\nReview grants and submit your responses to United Way team.\nJoin us in person (Location TBD) to review applications and help decide which projects receive funding. \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Seattle Martin Luther King Jr Coalition holds an annual MLK Celebration to celebrate and honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s legacy. The event includes a rally\, internships\, workshops\, youth led programming and job fair. \n  \nA signature part of the celebration is the annual march in honor of the peaceful protest that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. led during the civil rights movements to fight for equality. \n  \nAnd what’s a good march without signs? \n  \nGarfield High School campus\, where the festivities will take place is a large space so we are combining efforts with our United Way Emerging Leaders 365 young professionals and the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle Young Professionals to recruit volunteers to help people prepare for the march! \n  \nVolunteers will help by getting signs ready to distribute for the march right after the workshop and rally. Volunteers will be strategically dispersed throughout the Garfield High School parking lot to pass out signs. Handing out signs will begin at 11:45 am on January 20. You are welcome to come early to partake in additional activities in honor of Martin Luther King\, Jr. \n  \nThis opportunity is hosted by Emerging Leaders 365 and all are welcome to volunteer. DESCRIPTION:Join us in Olympia\, WA on Thursday\, February 1st to advocate for the basic needs of post-secondary students. \nAt United Way\, public policy advocacy is one of the key pillars of our work. Each year\, we advocate for legislation that promotes our community’s ability to thrive–especially our Black\, Indigenous\, and other communities of color. We meet with local\, and state elected officials\, and members of Congress—during and outside legislative sessions asking lawmakers to ensure adequate funding streams to proactively create equitable access to a high quality of life and resources for all people. We also participate in coalitions and advocacy groups that meet with legislators and lobbyists so we can learn from each other about the latest work. \nJoin United Way supporters in Olympia for the 2024 Lobby Day\, as we urge policymakers to meet post-secondary students’ basic needs for navigation\, food\, housing\, mental and behavioral healthcare\, and childcare. You will have the chance to learn about Advocacy 101\, learn about this year’s legislative priorities for United Way and the Post Secondary Basic Needs (PSBN) Coalition\, hear directly from student representatives from the Washington Students Association and meet with your district legislators to share your views. \nNo prior advocacy experience is needed. SUMMARY:Walk with United Way at Seattle Pride Parade
DESCRIPTION:Join United Way of King County in the largest Pride Parade in the Northwest on June 25. Show your pride or support your LGBTQIA2s+ community by showing up for the celebration. We want to see you: giving communities\, donors\, volunteers\, staff\, supporters and friends show up for equality! \n*Staging Announced*\nPride is moving to the afternoon! Staging was announced the morning of June 13 and we are meant to line up between 1:00pm – 1:30pm on the 4th avenue block between Jefferson and the Yesler Overpass.  That means if you had big plans Saturday night\, this timing is great news!  Do note the staging time is required and not recommended. \n \n  \nWe’ll meet you down 4th in the 21st spot of the line up.  This year’s theme is Galactic love so don’t be surprised if you see a couple of star wars helmets or suits. If you don’t know what to wear\, we’ve got you covered with t-shirts for you and your friends and gear to keep cool on a hot day. \n  \nMake sure to bring a water bottle. If you are coming with a little one\, you are welcome to pull them along in a wagon or even equip your younger ones with a set of wheels of their own to make it through the parade – set to end at 3:30pm. \n  \nThere are safety tents along the route to refill on water or step aside if needed. We will have extra swag that you can hand to the audience but be careful not to throw any items. \n  \nParking is LIMITED. We recommend taking transit to the parade or arriving early to find parking outside of the parade route. Plan to  meet during the staging window between 1:00pm – 1:30pm. \n  \nVolunteers will be enjoying themselves\, walking in the parade\, passing out goodies\, and holding the banner from time-to-time! \n  \nDon’t forget to let us know you’re coming and bring a friend! \n  \nThis activity is a volunteer project hosted by pride at United Way of King County. The community needs committed volunteers to make this day a success. \n  \nDia De Los Ninos (Day of the Child) is an annual celebration in Latin American culture on April 30\, but living in the Pacific Northwest\, means waiting for perfect weather in June to celebrate. The annual celebration was inaugurated through realizing that literacy went hand-in-hand with supporting the well-being of children. The day promotes bilingual and miltilingual literacy\, involving parents along the continued education journey and honoring culture. \n  \nSupport this first-time event in Federal Way for participants of El Centro De La Raza’s youth programs. \n  \n\nVolunteers will be helping host arts and crafts tables\, photo booths and other supporting roles. (flower crafting\, face painting\, ticketing\, markets etc.)\nVolunteers who speak multiple languages are encouraged but not required. Everyone is welcome to serve!\nDress comfortable and prepare to bond with our students and their families. DESCRIPTION:Did you know that for thousands of children the only meal they will consume in a day comes from their school?\nJoin us on May 13 for a monthly volunteer opportunity to support the Free Summer Meals Program\, ran by United Way of King County. \n  \n\nVolunteers will be preparing and packaging outreach materials so that our school districts and community partners can get the word out about free summer meals in our community. This will help raise awareness for families to know when and where they can access free summer meals while school is out.\n\n  \nHunger is  an especially urgent problem as we face the end of federally funded programs for economic recovery and increasing cost of living. UWKC is working to address food insecurity in our community\, which we know is disproportionately experience by BIPOC households due to historic and systemic racism. The Food Security team falls broadly into two categories: \n  \n  \n\nFeeding Our Community\, where we invest in and support the emergency food system to scale innovative strategies to provide dignified and equitable access to culturally specific\, nutritious food.\nEnding Childhood Hunger\, where we work to increase access to sustainable\, federally funded child nutrition programs like School Meals\, Afterschool and Summer Meals\, and Basic Food (SNAP)\, which have historically been under-utilized by kids and families due to systemic access barriers.\n\n  \nMeet Your Volunteer Lead\n“I look forward to seeing you all at United Way for this opportunity to be of service. For national volunteer month\, we’re hoping to gather 60 volunteers to help prepare meals with Food Lifeline’s Hunger Solution Center! \n  \nFood Lifeline provides nutritious food to 1.37 million people facing hunger and more than 282\,000 meals every single day. Let’s make the biggest impact for hunger relief during April\, National Volunteer Month. DESCRIPTION:Spend quality time with the senior residents of Angle Lake\, go for a nice stroll or simple hold a conversation. \n  \nJoin us on November 5 for a monthly volunteer opportunity to support Compass Housing Alliance. Compass Housing Alliance provides comprehensive assistance to Veterans\, families with children\, and men and women with complex needs in King County. Their services include four emergency shelters; a hygiene center\, mail\, and banking day services; and 14 housing programs that offer stable\, supportive environments for people on the path out of homelessness. \n \n  \n\nWe will spend a couple hours with the senior residents of Angle Lake by taking residents out for a walk (some love walking in the cold)\, playing games\, having conversations\, and/or helping them with organizing their rooms.\nPlease bring games or any fun activities to engage with the seniors! This property has not had volunteers in several years\, and the residents are so excited to engage with you all!\n\n  \nThis opportunity is for young professionals. Please join us for our November or December volunteer opportunities! \n  \nIt’s time to decorate the Seattle Convention Center! \n  \nWe had so much fun preparing paper flowers this past June that El Centro de La Raza  have invited us back for the day of their Building the Beloved Community Gala to benefit more than 21\,000 people. It’s time to finish crafting flowers\, decorate the building\, and hang our designs for the world to see! \n  \nJoin us on October 8 from 10:00 am – 2:30 pm to support El Centro de la Raza. \n  \n\nWe will be creating decorations and hanging them on the wall\, decorating the dining tables with beautiful centerpieces\, and also preparing the auction area by setting up tables and  arranging merchandise.
