SUMMARY:Tackle hunger with Food Lifeline
DESCRIPTION:Food Lifeline works with the food industry and its surpluses to come up with creative solutions to stopping hunger\, including redirecting good food from manufacturers\, farmers\, grocery stores and restaurants that might otherwise go to waste. The organization provides 91\,000 meals per day to local food assistance programs\, and that\, combined with policy work\, creates a sustainable approach to stopping hunger. \nEach year\, Food Lifeline sorts through 40 million pounds of food. Inspecting and packing this food takes a lot of hands! FareStart is an amazing (and delicious) partner of United Way’s – but this time\, instead of them bringing food to us\, we’re bringing helping hands to them. \nPoverty is a perpetual cycle—especially for people who are homeless\, in recovery\, or previously incarcerated. For them\, finding and keeping a job is a huge struggle. FareStart helps people overcome the barriers to employment by developing the work and life skills they need to have lifelong careers. In turn\, their amazing talent and hard work fuels the organization’s social enterprise restaurants\, cafes\, catering and community meals programs.

Or how much of that cost is covered by food stamps or other assistance programs? \nYou’ll learn the answers to those questions (and so much more) when you join Emerging Leaders at Westside Baby. They’re the only social service agency in the West King County area that collects\, inspects\, and distributes free diapers\, clothing\, cribs and safety gear for babies and children. In the past sixteen years\, they’re provided $16.5 million worth of free diapers\, clothing and gear to help more than 195\,000 infants and children. \nWith all the support Westside Baby provides to families\, we though it only fair to support Westside Baby! DESCRIPTION:We can all agree: when kids – regardless of ethnicity\, religion\, or socioeconomic status – do better\, we all do better. More importantly\, education builds a strong foundation that our community can grow on. \nEmerging Leaders will partner with the Vietnamese Friendship Association to lend a hand in building that foundation. The Vietnamese community in Seattle is a key part of what makes our city ours\, and the VFA is dedicated to making sure it’s a community that thrives. DESCRIPTION:Say that three times fast. \nEvery year\, United Way’s Free Tax Prep Program helps tens of thousands of low-income families maximize their tax return by training thousands of volunteers on the intricacies of tax returns – especially on how to file for the Earned Income Tax Credit. When you’re a single mom who sometimes has to choose between paying the rent and paying for your kids’ school supplies\, an extra $3000 can go a long way towards building financial stability. \nTax season is nearly upon us\, and that means we’re getting ready to open hundreds of free tax sites around King County. Emerging Leaders will lend a hand to prep kits for these tax sites\, making sure every location is ready to go on day one. We’re building a community where people have homes\, students graduate\, and families are financially stable – and with your help\, each day we get closer to that goal. \nNow it’s our turn to give back to you! Please join us for a holiday party where we’ll celebrate the impact Emerging Leaders have had this year – and all attendees will receive a little thank-you gift for making it possible. We’ll have all sorts of holiday treats\, including staples like hot chocolate & cookies\, and you’ll be able to mingle and chat with your fellow Leaders. \nBut that’s not all! We know you\, and we know you’re always looking for ways to give back. DESC has been providing emergency shelter for vulnerable adults – especially those living with behavioral health disorders and chronic homelessness – since 1979. The organization has grown with Seattle’s needs and now also offers an array of clinical services and other support. \nAs we all know\, it’s hard enough to keep one tiny apartment clean for a weekend\, much less keep an entire building spiffy for 35+ years! DESCRIPTION:This project has reached capacity! Please join us for another volunteer project instead. \nImagine a pile of 2.7 million children’s books spread across the state of Washington. Now imagine serving more than 850\,000 kids with those books and other literary programs. Seems like an impossible challenge\, right? Thankfully\, it’s a challenge that Page Ahead has been rising to since 1990. It’s the #1 provider of children’s books and services in Washington and focuses on helping kids from low-income families bump up their reading level and gain the English skills they need to succeed in school. \nThere’s nothing better than curling up with a good book and a cup of warm cider (or a PSL\, anyone?) on a crisp fall day\, and Emerging Leaders will join Page Ahead to make sure the next generation of learners has the chance to do just that. SUMMARY:Get ready for fall with Friends of Youth
DESCRIPTION:October brings cooler temps and more rainy days – for most of us\, that just means an extra layer and maybe a raincoat. However\, for homeless youth\, what seems minor to most people can be a huge burden. Friends of Youth helps alleviate that burden; it’s the only youth shelter on the Eastside\, and offers services and resources in addition to a dry\, warm place to sleep. \nEmerging Leaders will be lending a hand at the organization to prep for fall\, when shelters get busier and staff need all the help they can get. SUMMARY:Get healthy food to hungry hands with Food Lifeline
DESCRIPTION:Here at United Way\, we believe that hunger is a problem we can help solve – and it’s with great partners like Food Lifeline that we’re making strides towards achieving that goal. Food Lifeline works with the food industry and its surpluses to come up with creative solutions to stopping hunger\, including redirecting good food from manufacturers\, farmers\, grocery stores and restaurants that might otherwise go to waste. The organization provides 91\,000 meals per day to local food assistance programs\, and that\, combined with policy work\, creates a sustainable approach to stopping hunger. \nEach year\, Food Lifeline sorts through 40 million pounds of food. Inspecting and packing this food takes a lot of hands! Emerging Leaders will assist with inspection\, sorting and repacking donations for distribution to the network of 275 hunger relief partners across Western Washington. Please join us for another opportunity instead. \nIt seems that lately\, all anyone can talk about is the approaching cold weather\, and here at UWKC it’s no different! As the weather gets chilly\, warm food gets even more comforting – so Emerging Leaders are partnering with Angeline’s to provide homeless women a safe space for a hearty lunch. At Angeline’s\, these women not only have access to meals\, but also to laundry\, showers\, activities and connections to other services. \nAt Angeline’s\, we’ll add a fun touch to the dining room with colorful tablecloths and napkins before serving lunch to guests (usually 100-150 women each day!). It’s also a great opportunity to chat and offer a friendly face to those in need.

A: $70-$100 (that’s up to $1200 per year – just for diapers!)\nQ: How much of that cost is covered by food stamps or other assistance programs? A: $0 \nThose stats make Westside Baby’s work all the more impactful: they’re the only social service agency in the West King County area that collects\, inspects and distributes free diapers\, clothing\, cribs and safety gear for babies and children. DESCRIPTION:Far too often\, parents in our community have to make the choice between working to put food on the table and spending time with their kids. Jubilee REACH helps solve that problem on the Eastside\, where it works to provide access to assistance programs and youth services. They offer mentoring\, tutoring\, and over 20 after-school clubs and sports at various Bellevue public schools. The Thrift Store is a huge part of making that work possible\, and every dollar of net profit goes back to the community. \nIf you’ve ever worked in retail\, you know the drill: we’ll be in the front of the house (re-stocking the floors and shelves\, organizing racks and other household items\, and helping customers) and also the back (hanging clothes\, sorting through donations\, cutting price tags\, tagging prices on merchandise and receiving donations from donors). SUMMARY:Hands-on lessons about food justice at Marra Farm
DESCRIPTION:Through its gardening projects\, Marra Farm not only cultivates food for those in need but also teaches neighborhood self-reliance\, environmental awareness and about issues like hunger relief and improved nutrition. We’ll be helping out in Lettuce Link’s Giving Garden\, a 3/4-acre plot on historic urban farmland. All of the produce grown in the Giving Garden stays in the South Park community and is distributed via food banks\, meal programs and the Work Trade program. \nWe’ll be all hands on deck for whatever Lettuce Link needs: we’re enlisted to help prepare soil and garden beds\, mix compost\, plant vegetable starts and seeds\, weed\, harvest and/or wash produce. SUMMARY:Provide for those in need at St. Mary's Food Bank
DESCRIPTION:For almost 75 years\, the Food Bank at St. Mary’s has been helping the hungry in the Central District and beyond. Today\, the Food Bank provides groceries to 6\,700 people per week through the Walk-In Program\, when anyone is welcome to come in and choose what they need for the week. In addition\, the Food Bank delivers food to those in need who are unable to leave their homes and provides a “No-Cook” Program for those who are currently experiencing homelessness and don’t have access to cooking facilities. \nEmerging Leaders will be providing direct service in the Food Bank\, helping those who have come to shop for groceries – a friendly face and a helping hand can go almost as far as a bag of food for those in need. A few volunteers will also put their art talents to good use\, helping the Food Bank create signage for their upcoming Gala fundraiser. \nJoin us to lend a hand and a smile – email Cassandra to sign up today!

DESCRIPTION:This project is full! Please join us for a different awesome volunteer opportunity. \nThere are a million people in Washington at risk of going hungry every night\, and the Emergency Feeding Program aims to alleviate hunger by making nutritious food available when and where people need it. At the King County facility\, donations are collected\, sorted\, and packaged into fifteen different types of food bags – from diabetic to Asian or Latino or East African to baby. Then\, the Emergency Feeding Program partners with agencies around the county to deliver the food bags and ensure that every family\, no matter their financial situation\, has access to nutrition. \nWe’ll be lending a hand in various ways – labeling\, tapping and cleaning collection barrels; sorting food in the warehouse; maybe even some administrative assistance to help ensure operations are running smoothly! \n  \n
