SUMMARY:Help United Way Get Ready for the Free Tax Prep Campaign
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, United Way volunteers help thousands of low-income people prepare their taxes. For many clients\, tax credits and refunds are critical to keeping food on the table and a roof overhead. Volunteers also connect people to savings opportunities and public benefits that they may not even know are available to them. \nThe Free Tax Preparation Campaign is part of a community-wide effort to help 50\,000 people escape poverty by 2020. We know it works\, and with your help we can continue to serve more people each year. \nHelp UWKC sort and bundle outreach and informational materials for the Free Tax Campaign. \n  \nThis opportunity is open to young professionals as part of our Emerging Leaders 365 program.

SUMMARY:Help United Way Prep for the Family Resource Exchange
DESCRIPTION:United Way’s Family Resource Exchange events lessen the heavy burden of homelessness by connecting families to housing and providing other specific resources families need. Services include financial support programs and public benefits for families\, child care resources\, on-the-spot job interviews\, haircuts\, new shoes and a food bank. \nEmerging Leaders will help prepare supplies for the upcoming Family Resource Exchange. There is a giveaway area at the event\, which has large quantities of free groceries\, hygiene materials\, clothes\, shoes\, and school supplies. Tasks will include (1) consolidating and organizing giveaways into boxes of like-items\, (2) assembling and organizing event signage\, (3) organizing supplies by event area\, (4) creating giveaway bags for service providers\, (5) moving supplies for easy load-out. \n  \nThis opportunity is open to young professionals  as part of our Emerging Leaders 365 program

SUMMARY:Cook with FareStart to Support Financial Stability
DESCRIPTION:Are you a seasoned chef? Pride yourself on that amazing homemade pho? Or are you that person in the kitchen that can barely tell which end of the knife is which? \nNo matter which of those questions you answered “yes” to\, we still want you to come prepare a meal with other Emerging Leaders in the FareStart Community Meals kitchen! FareStart is an amazing (and delicious) partner of United Way’s – but this time\, instead of them bringing food to us\, we’re bringing helping hands to them. \nPoverty is a perpetual cycle—especially for people who are homeless\, in recovery\, or previously incarcerated. Dealing with these conditions makes finding and keeping a job a huge struggle. FareStart helps people overcome the barriers to employment by developing the work and life skills they need to have lifelong careers. In turn\, their amazing talent and hard work fuels the organization’s social enterprise restaurants\, cafes\, catering and community meals programs. \n  \nThis opportunity is open to young professionals part of our Emerging Leaders 365 program.

SUMMARY:Connect for Good-Fighting Homelessness
DESCRIPTION:Connect for Good is a chance to take your volunteering and community engagement up a notch. Do you have questions about why people are homeless? What our community is doing about the issue? What’s working\, what’s already been tried and what isn’t working? This experience will give you the chance to get answers to all those questions (and more) so that you can understand contributing factors as well as solutions that are moving people safely into permanent homes. \n\nThe commitment: Sessions will be held on Nov 20 and Dec 4. During these two sessions you’ll learn in-depth information about the issue of homelessness in King County\, how to engage your networks to fight homelessness and get to know your fellow Emerging Leaders. Then on Dec 14\, you’ll volunteer as a group at the Family Resource Exchange to directly help those who are experiencing homelessness. \n  \nNote that this is a multiple day volunteering opportunity and participants will need to commit to the following schedule: \nWednesday 11/20 (6pm – 8:30pm) \n·       Introduction to United Way: Overview of Four Focus Areas \n·       Part 1: Ending Homelessness \n·       Part 1: Fundraising basics/ best practices \nNovember 21 – Dec 3 (fundraise and work on activities) \nWednesday 12/4 (6pm – 8:30pm) \n·       Part 2: Fundraising basics/ best practices \n·       Part 2: Ending Homelessness \nSaturday December 14 (9am – 3pm) \n·         Family Resource Exchange (commit to attending 3hr morning shift or 3hr afternoon shift) \nBy signing up for this project you are committing to participating during Nov/ Dec (a duration of 3 weeks).  \nThis opportunity is for young professionals as part of the Emerging Leaders 365 program.

SUMMARY:Family Resource Exchange-help families experiencing homelessness
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 2019 Family Resource Exchange event at Seattle Central College and help connect families experiencing homelessness with critical resources in one place at one time. We are looking to get families connected to housing resources\, clothing\, groceries\, haircuts\, employment\, education\, legal services\, childcare assistance\, and so much more! \nAt the last Family Resource Exchange\, we met 350 households/1000 people impacted by the crisis of homelessness. It is unacceptable that so many kids and families experience homelessness\, but with your support\, we can help even more families reach housing stability. \nVolunteers will help greet families\, provide navigation at the event\, support resource stations and help create a warm and welcoming environment. All volunteers will get an information packet prior to the event and their volunteer role day of the event.

SUMMARY:Work with ELL Students at Vietnamese Friendship Association
DESCRIPTION:Refugee and immigrant youth experience tremendous barriers to success and self-sufficiency. These youth are usually one or more years behind their native English-speaking peers\, which negatively impacts their self-esteem and learning outcomes. Vietnamese Friendship Association works to mitigate these disparities by providing an after school program\, Saturday English School and Summer Science Academy for youth at Seattle World School. Students who have participated in VFA’s academic programs have made strong academic gains. Over 85% of students have increased their math and English scores by the equivalent of half a grade level—as measured by standardized tests. \nEmerging Leaders will help at Vietnamese Friendship Association’s Saturday English School. Volunteers will provide one on one support for students and work in groups with the parent class. \nThis opportunity is open to young professionals  as part of our Emerging Leaders 365 program.
