SUMMARY:Emerging Leaders 365: Volunteer & Learn - Fighting Food Insecurity
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Volunteer & Learn opportunity to learn about United Way of King County’s food security work\, and participate in a volunteer opportunity in support of United Way’s food bank partners. \n  \nLearn: Join us virtually on April 7th\, 5:30pm – 6:30pm\, to learn about United Way’s hunger relief work. Hunger in King County has tripled since the pandemic began\, and COVID-19 has deepened inequities that already existed in our community. You will learn about the landscape of food insecurity in King County\, how the emergency food system is responding\, and how United Way is leveraging innovative partnerships with DoorDash and 30+ local food banks to deliver grocery boxes to over 5\,000 households each week. \n  \nVolunteer: Follow up this virtual learning experience with an in-person volunteer shift the following week at a local food bank to see the emergency food system in action! We encourage you to sign up for a shift at one of the below food banks: \n– North Helpline Food Bank \n– Pike Market Food Bank \n– Tukwila Pantry \n– Multi-Service Center – Federal Way \n  \nThese food banks may require a volunteer application and/or an orientation before a shift\, so please take a look at their website for more information around this and about their COVID-19 precautions. \n  \nThis opportunity is for young professionals as part of the Emerging Leaders 365 program. You will need wifi and a screen/device you can use to participate in the virtual call.

DESCRIPTION:Facilitated by Gordon McHenry\, Jr.\, United Way of King County President & CEO\, this virtual panel will feature Sean Goode (Choose180)\, Regina Elmi (Supporting Partnerships in Education and Beyond)\, and Marshaun Barber (Reclaiming our Greatness). Learn more about the first year of the Collective\, how we’re centering community and where we’re going next! \nThe Black Community Building Collective started in fall 2020 as a participatory funding approach to invest in Black-led organizations. If you are unable to provide payment\, please select the ‘no cost ticket’ to join us. \n  \nPlease RSVP by 6/14 \nThe Zoom link for this event will be included on the confirmation page and email and will also be sent out closer to the event from an Eventbrite address\, which sometimes winds up in spam folders. \n  \nUnited Way is committed to making all of our events accessible. SUMMARY:June Monthly Volunteer Challenge: Housewarming Gift Drive for Students
DESCRIPTION:Education can be a pathway out of poverty\, and community colleges offer an affordable way for low-income students to complete their education. In fact\, in King County\, more than half of students enrolled are low-income. However\, access is only part of the challenge\, and fewer than half of the students enrolled will earn their credential due to financial barriers\, and the current pandemic and the following social\, political\, and economic impacts is creating exacerbated hardship for many students. Bridge to Finish is changing completion rates by providing coordinated services and supports to students today so that they can stay in school\, and influencing systems change for a more equitable experience for future generations of students. The largest barriers these college students face are food and housing due to systemic and institutional racism and those affected are predominantly BIPOC students. \nPlease join us in supporting Highline College students moving into a new apartment through a program called WISH in partnership with Bridge to Finish!  Emerging Leaders 365 volunteers will shop online to purchase materials that will be distributed as housewarming gifts to newly housed students. \nCheck back for a video here to learn more about the program and how you can volunteer. \nThis opportunity is for young professionals as part of the Emerging Leaders 365 program. \n

In choosing this spelling\, we hoped to create the most welcoming space possible. We have received feedback that for some\, our efforts to be inclusive may have instead been exclusionary. We know that language is dynamic and evolving and we will continue to listen and learn as we work to build a better\, more inclusive community. \n  \nThis event is brought to you in partnership with the Gates Foundation Discovery Center\, YP Impact and United Way of King County.
