SUMMARY:Connect for Good: Helping Students Graduate
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a virtual multi-session immersive volunteer experience where you will get to deep dive into our Bridge to Finish program\, learn how to leverage your networks to fundraise\, and put together a sweet house warming gift for newly-housed students. \nWe need people who can commit to two (2) education days during November 2020. Meetings will be held virtually for 1.5 hours in the evening.  Sign up via the button below the description! \n  \nA bit about Bridge to Finish: Education can be a pathway out of poverty\, and community colleges offer an affordable way for low-income students to complete their education. In fact\, in King County\, more than half of students enrolled are low-income. However\, access is only part of the challenge\, and fewer than half of the students enrolled will earn their credential due to financial barriers. Bridge to Finish is changing completion rates by providing coordinated services and supports to students today so that they can stay in school\, and influencing systems change for a more equitable experience for future generations of students. The largest barriers these college students face are food and housing due to systemic and institutional racism and those affected are predominantly BIPOC students. \n  \nSession 1: Monday\, 11/9 \n5:30 p.m.–7 p.m. \nZoom call \n  \n11/9- 11/16         Volunteering (fundraising and housewarming gift assembly) \n  \nSession 2: Monday\, 11/16 \n5:30 p.m.–7 p.m. \nZoom call \n  \nOptional: Wednesday\, 11/18 \n6 p.m. – 7 p.m. \nVirtual Community Cocktail @ Jerk Shack \nFundraise $365 and start your year of impact as an Emerging Leader 365 donor. As a thank you\, we’ll give the first 5 people to raise $365 a free ticket code to our Virtual Community Cocktail event we are doing with Jerk Shack! \n

SUMMARY:Monthly Volunteer Challenge: Support With The Census
DESCRIPTION:The Census deadline is fast approaching – and was recently shortened by one month from the end of October to the end of September. Time is running out\, and this is our last chance to get as many people as possible to respond to the 2020 Census! During the month of September\, grab some friends and help United Way of King County with our final push to make sure that everyone who calls Washington home is represented in this important survey! In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic\, it’s clear how crucial it is that we are all counted. \nImportant things to note about the Census: \n\nIt determines how many representatives Washington state will have in Congress\nIt dictates how funding is distributed for real things that affect our lives\, like the number of teachers in our schools\, the need for affordable housing in our community and the number of nurses and beds in our hospitals\nIt determines the availability of benefits\, like food stamps!\nIt’s really really important – and fast! – to complete. Just go online to www.2020census.gov\nCensus data is protected by VERY strong confidentiality laws\, the data is never shared\, and there is no citizenship question.\n\n  \nHelp us spread the word to our neighbors in King County to fill out the Census before the deadline! \nBy signing up for this project you are agreeing to help with Census outreach in one or more of these ways: \n\nSocial Media Campaign: Use your social media to urge your community to fill out the Census.\nNeighborhood Outreach: Promote the Census on foot in the neighborhood where you live or work. Distribute flyers and outreach materials provided by United Way to local businesses\, bulletin boards\, etc.\n\n  \nJoin us virtually on September 2nd from 5:30-6:30 PM to kick off the project and learn more about the importance of the Census. \nDidn’t make the call? No worries! You can watch the recording here at any time and get all the info you need. \nThis opportunity is for young professionals as part of the Emerging Leaders 365 program.

SUMMARY:Help Collect Diapers for ParentChild+ Families
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Diaper Drive during the entire month of July! \nSome context:Nearly two out of three low-income children in King County are behind their peers when they start kindergarten. The ParentChild+ program closes this gap by helping parents become their children’s first and best teachers. This program reaches low-income families when and where it matters most – in the home\, when children and 2 and 3 years old. Trained parent coaches visit families at home twice a week for two years\, bringing a book or toy each week to model educational play. Families are matched with coaches of the same language and cultural background so the program is culturally relevant. In King County\, over 1300 families are served each year through this program! \nHere comes your part:To help ParentChild+ families manage the challenging financial impacts of COVID-19\, Emerging Leaders 365 will be gathering diapers to be distributed to ParentChild+ families. This is a great way to engage your community and help families in a tangible way. \nBy signing up for this project\, you are agreeing to either purchase diapers yourself or host a drive to collect diaper donations from your community. Diapers can either be shipped or delivered to West African Community Council  by July 31(address to come). We will follow up with more information on diaper sizes\, delivery information\, and tips for hosting a drive! \nJoin us virtually on July 1 from 5:30-6:30 PM to kick off the project and learn more about the ParentChild+ program. Click respond\, and we’ll send you the link to join the call. \nCan’t make the call? No worries! It will be recorded so you can watch it anytime you sign up during July. \n  \nThis opportunity is for young professionals as part of the Emerging Leaders 365 program.
