SUMMARY:Support Families with WestSide Baby
DESCRIPTION:Pop quiz time! \nQ: How much does an adequate monthly supply of diapers cost per child? A: $70-$100 (that’s up to $1200 per year – just for diapers!)\nQ: How much of that cost is covered by food stamps or other assistance programs? A: $0 \nThose stats make Westside Baby’s work all the more impactful: they’re the only social service agency in the West King County area that collects\, inspects and distributes free diapers\, clothing\, cribs and safety gear for babies and children. In the past sixteen years\, they’ve provided $16.5 million worth of free diapers\, clothing and gear to help more than 195\,000 infants and children. \nWith all of the support Westside Baby provides to families\, we thought it only fair to support Westside Baby! Emerging Leaders will spend a few hours sorting donations of clothing and toys\, filling orders\, creating clothing bags\, and bundling diapers. \nThis opportunity is for young professionals as part of the Emerging Leaders 365 program.

SUMMARY:Cook with FareStart to Support Financial Stability
DESCRIPTION:Are you a seasoned chef? Pride yourself on that amazing homemade pho? Or are you that person in the kitchen that can barely tell which end of the knife is which? \nNo matter which of those questions you answered “yes” to\, we still want you to come prepare a meal with other Emerging Leaders in the FareStart Community Meals kitchen! FareStart is an amazing (and delicious) partner of United Way’s – but this time\, instead of them bringing food to us\, we’re bringing helping hands to them. \nPoverty is a perpetual cycle—especially for people who are homeless\, in recovery\, or previously incarcerated. Dealing with these conditions makes finding and keeping a job a huge struggle. FareStart helps people overcome the barriers to employment by developing the work and life skills they need to have lifelong careers. In turn\, their amazing talent and hard work fuels the organization’s social enterprise restaurants\, cafes\, catering and community meals programs. \n  \nThis opportunity is open to young professionals part of our Emerging Leaders 365 program.

SUMMARY:Work with ELL Students at Vietnamese Friendship Association
DESCRIPTION:Refugee and immigrant youth experience tremendous barriers to success and self-sufficiency. These youth are usually one or more years behind their native English-speaking peers\, which negatively impacts their self-esteem and learning outcomes. Vietnamese Friendship Association works to mitigate these disparities by providing an after school program\, Saturday English School and Summer Science Academy for youth at Seattle World School. Students who have participated in VFA’s academic programs have made strong academic gains. Over 85% of students have increased their math and English scores by the equivalent of half a grade level—as measured by standardized tests. \nEmerging Leaders will help at Vietnamese Friendship Association’s Saturday English School. Volunteers will provide one on one support for students and work in groups with the parent class. \nThis opportunity is open to young professionals  as part of our Emerging Leaders 365 program.
