SUMMARY:Conversations for Change with Timothy Snyder
DESCRIPTION:Author of On Tyranny  to On Freedom\, Timothy Snyder has delved into how to resist fascism and where we go from here.\n\nUnited Way is teaming up with Seattle Arts & Lectures to co-present Timothy Snyder\, the acclaimed historian behind “On Tyranny” and “On Freedom\,” on October 26 at Benaroya Hall (S. Mark Taper Foundation Auditorium). \nFreedom is the great American commitment\, but we have lost sight of what it means. Too many of us look at freedom as the absence of state power\, argues Timothy Snyder: We think we’re free if we can do and say as we please\, and protect ourselves from government overreach. But true freedom isn’t so much freedom from as freedom to—the freedom to thrive\, to take risks for futures we choose by working together. Freedom is the value that makes all other values possible. \nUse code: UWKC20 for 20% off tickets (all in-person or online tickets\, at any level besides Pay what you Want)  \nUnited Way is committed to making all our events as accessible as possible. When you register\, you’ll have an opportunity to indicate any accommodations you need. Please note that a minimum of two weeks’ notice is necessary to arrange some accessibility needs. If you have any questions\, please reach out to eventregistration@uwkc.org.

SUMMARY:Volunteer - Help Families Find Free Summer Meals
DESCRIPTION:When school is out\, many families lose access to the free and reduced-price meals their kids rely on during the year.\nThe Free Summer Meals Program exists to help bridge that gap by offering free meals to all youth under 18—no paperwork or sign-up required. In 2023\, over 12\,000 kids per day accessed meals at more than 200 sites across King County. \nTo help raise awareness\, we’re looking for volunteers to join us on June 13 to place yard signs across South King County. These signs will help connect families to local sites where food (and often fun activities) are already available. \nWe’ll start at the Burien Community Center with a short kickoff—then break into groups to head out into nearby neighborhoods. \nHere’s how you can help: \n\n\nBring your car and help transport signs and volunteers along a route. \n\n\nTeam up with coworkers\, family\, or friends—you’re welcome to form your own group. \n\n\nPrefer to walk? We’ll have shorter\, walkable routes available too. \n\n\nThis is a simple but meaningful way to support access to food and information—right in the neighborhoods where it’s needed. \nJoin us to get the word out and help make this resource visible to more families.

SUMMARY:Help Community Projects Get Funded - Volunteer Opportunity
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that April is National Volunteer Month? \n  \nEach April community organizations gear up for the challenges ahead whether that be pulling weeds to make room for fresh produce\, sorting inventory for free grocery pick up\, or creating gifts for children experiencing homelessness. \n  \nThis year\, organizations are in need of access funding to answer increased demand and United Way of King County is in a unique position to leverage earned dollars through grants\, corporate sponsors\, and individual donors to reward a total of $8\,000 to our partners working to keep people housed\, children feed\, and resources flowing throughout the community. \n  \nLike our partners\, we could use some assistance in reviewing grant applications and rewarding funds to organizations who will triple our impact. Will you help? \n  \nUnited Way of King County is inviting volunteers\, like you\, to select which nonprofit organizations will receive funding to host a volunteer opportunity in April. No prior grant experience is needed—we’ll guide you through the process! \nNote that this is a multiple day volunteering opportunity and participants will need to commit to the following schedule: \n-Session 1: March 10th @6 PM\nJoin us virtually to explore grant-making from the inside out with a community services expert.  A meeting invitation will be sent to all registrants prior to the session.  \n-Session 2 March 15th @11 AM\nReview grants and submit your responses to United Way team.\nJoin us in person (Location TBD) to review applications and help decide which projects receive funding. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Advocate for Student Basic Needs at Lobby Day
DESCRIPTION:Show up. Speak out. Shape the future! \nJoin us on Wednesday\, February 5\, 2025\, for Postsecondary Basic Needs (PSBN) Lobby Day at the Capitol in Olympia to support students! \nWhy join? \nEducation is a proven pathway out of poverty\, but too many students in Washington state struggle to persist or complete educational programs because they cannot meet their basic needs for food\, mental + behavioral healthcare\, childcare\, housing\, or support to navigate existing systems. Together\, we can advocate for equitable policies and resources students need to thrive. \nWhat to expect? \n\nRally with student advocates\, state representatives\, and coalition partners as we fight for essential student needs like college support services\, housing\, childcare\, mental health\, behavioral healthcare\, and food security.\nConnect with legislators to amplify the call for essential student support services.\nNo experience needed—just your passion!\n\n📅 When: February 5\, 2025\n📍 Where: Abigail Stuart House (1002 Washington St SE\, Olympia\, WA 98501) and the Washington State Capitol Campus \nLet’s fight for equitable access to education and win. SUMMARY:MLK March for Equity - Community Volunteer Opportunity
DESCRIPTION:Seattle Martin Luther King Jr Coalition holds an annual MLK Celebration to celebrate and honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s legacy. The event includes a rally\, internships\, workshops\, youth led programming and job fair. \n  \nA signature part of the celebration is the annual march in honor of the peaceful protest that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. led during the civil rights movements to fight for equality. \n  \nAnd what’s a good march without signs? \n  \nGarfield High School campus\, where the festivities will take place is a large space so we are combining efforts with our United Way Emerging Leaders 365 young professionals and the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle Young Professionals to recruit volunteers to help people prepare for the march! \n  \nVolunteers will help by getting signs ready to distribute for the march right after the workshop and rally. Volunteers will be strategically dispersed throughout the Garfield High School parking lot to pass out signs. Handing out signs will begin at 11:45 am on January 20. You are welcome to come early to partake in additional activities in honor of Martin Luther King\, Jr. \n  \nThis opportunity is hosted by Emerging Leaders 365 and all are welcome to volunteer. Each opportunity supports United Way of King County’s mission to work side-by-side with communities to create a more equitable future for everyone! Ensuring everyone in our community has access to housing\, food security\, educational opportunities\, and financial stability.

SUMMARY:Get Out the Vote: Your Voice Matters
DESCRIPTION:Get the scoop on initiatives that have the potential to interrupt your daily lives.\n\nRSVP Today\n\n  \nJoin us for an inspiring evening co-hosted by YPC-Seattle\, United Way of King County’s Emerging Leaders 365\, Seattle Metro Chamber’s Young Professionals Network (YPN)\, and Young Nonprofit Professionals Network (YNPN). \n  \nThis event will feature an insightful fire-side chat with local and civic leaders about the critical role of voting\, the significance of local elections\, and key issues on the ballot. You’ll have access to valuable resources offering guidance on deepening your community engagement\, effectively communicating with your legislators\, and managing your mental health before\, during\, and after an election. \n  \nDon’t miss this opportunity to learn\, connect\, and make a difference! \nSpeakers:\n \nAlicia Crank’s intense passion for the city has been on full display the past two years in her role as executive director of Seattle CityClub\, where she has worked tirelessly to bring diverse voices to Seattle’s political scene. \n“For me\, it’s always been about making sure that there’s representation on our local city councils\,” says Crank\, a former candidate for Edmonds City Council herself. “Representation doesn’t just mean race or gender\, it’s socioeconomic. It’s also life experience\, and work experience.” \nIn addition to her CityClub duties\, Crank has joined Seattle magazine as the new “director of opportunities.” In her new role\, Crank will serve as a community ambassador for the publication\, and will help identify both revenue and engagement opportunities. \n  \n \nJulie Wise was first elected in 2015. Her election followed a long career with King County Elections that began in 2000 when Julie was hired to answer voter questions and provide assistance in the phone bank. In the years between\, Julie worked her way up to Deputy Director\, with time spent in nearly every work area. In her more than twenty years of service to voters\, Julie has earned both her state and national certifications in election administration. \nA champion for increasing both accessibility and security\, Julie is dedicated to removing barriers to voting\, while maintaining accuracy\, security\, and transparency. She has been a vocal advocate for expanding language access and has been successful in adding four non-English languages to King County Elections’ suite of full-service languages. The department now provides ballots\, voting materials\, all correspondence\, customer service\, and voter education materials in seven languages.
