SUMMARY:Conversations for Change with Timothy Snyder
DESCRIPTION:Author of On Tyranny  to On Freedom\, Timothy Snyder has delved into how to resist fascism and where we go from here.\n\nUnited Way is teaming up with Seattle Arts & Lectures to co-present Timothy Snyder\, the acclaimed historian behind “On Tyranny” and “On Freedom\,” on October 26 at Benaroya Hall (S. Mark Taper Foundation Auditorium). \nFreedom is the great American commitment\, but we have lost sight of what it means. Too many of us look at freedom as the absence of state power\, argues Timothy Snyder: We think we’re free if we can do and say as we please\, and protect ourselves from government overreach. But true freedom isn’t so much freedom from as freedom to—the freedom to thrive\, to take risks for futures we choose by working together. Freedom is the value that makes all other values possible. \nUse code: UWKC20 for 20% off tickets (all in-person or online tickets\, at any level besides Pay what you Want)  \nUnited Way is committed to making all our events as accessible as possible. When you register\, you’ll have an opportunity to indicate any accommodations you need. Please note that a minimum of two weeks’ notice is necessary to arrange some accessibility needs. If you have any questions\, please reach out to eventregistration@uwkc.org.

SUMMARY:Volunteer - Help Families Find Free Summer Meals
DESCRIPTION:When school is out\, many families lose access to the free and reduced-price meals their kids rely on during the year.\nThe Free Summer Meals Program exists to help bridge that gap by offering free meals to all youth under 18—no paperwork or sign-up required. In 2023\, over 12\,000 kids per day accessed meals at more than 200 sites across King County. \nTo help raise awareness\, we’re looking for volunteers to join us on June 13 to place yard signs across South King County. These signs will help connect families to local sites where food (and often fun activities) are already available. \nWe’ll start at the Burien Community Center with a short kickoff—then break into groups to head out into nearby neighborhoods. \nHere’s how you can help: \n\n\nBring your car and help transport signs and volunteers along a route. \n\n\nTeam up with coworkers\, family\, or friends—you’re welcome to form your own group. \n\n\nPrefer to walk? We’ll have shorter\, walkable routes available too. \n\n\nThis is a simple but meaningful way to support access to food and information—right in the neighborhoods where it’s needed. \nJoin us to get the word out and help make this resource visible to more families.

SUMMARY:Happy Hour & Hellos: Seattle Mariners
DESCRIPTION:Grab a last minute seat!\nHappy Hour & Hellos are moving inside T-Mobile Stadium on May 27 at Hit-it-Here Cafe. We are thrilled to offer an exciting venue thanks to our generous sponsors at Seattle Mariners Care Foundation\, Amazon\, and Alaska Airlines. \nThese organizations believe in younger generations paving the path in philanthropy and giving back to their communities through United Way of King County. That’s exactly what our year of impact with Emerging Leaders 365 looks like all year long\, whether we are volunteering\, networking\, or donating a dollar a day\, because collectively our small efforts make a large impact! \n  \nHere’s the line-up!\n  \nThe ballpark opens at 5:10 pm for the Seattle Mariners game against the Washington Nationals. You’ll want to arrive early to claim a limited-edition Randy Arozarena Bobblehead. Happy Hour & Hellos is a 21+ event\, and we’ve got the scoop on exactly where to enter the stadium to claim your bobblehead and skip the lines! \n  \nThe night is focused on our neighbor fund that supports families having access to food and housing. Sometimes our neighbors get the help they need at a moment’s notice with our rapid response grants. Additionally\, The Seattle Mariners have been avid partners in our efforts to break down barriers to education and opportunities for young people. \n  \nThe ballpark is alive and well inside the Hit it Here Cafe for Happy Hour & Hellos with a classic ball park menu of grilled hamburgers and hotdogs\, including vegetarian patties and links. The baked potato bar will be open and plenty of snacks like kettle chips and popcorn that are gluten free. Plus two drink tokens. Happy Hour & Hellos officially kicks off at 5:30pm with some community highlights including ways to get involved at 6:00pm. \n  \nNetwork with like-minded professionals who care about giving back to the community and take action all before the first pitch!\n  \nThat’s right\, you’re welcome to stay for the game when you arrive at the venue before the first pitch! So\, load up an Uber or light rail with your favorite co-workers and head down to the stadium. We’ll have some exciting prizes for those networking with us\, including limited edition Mariner’s gear! \n  \nWe are thrilled to be partnering on this exciting event that supports United Way’s mission to create a more equitable future for everyone! \n  \nPurchase your tickets on Eventbrite and a United Way coordinator will confirm your order and send you your digital Seattle Mariners ticket to access the stadium each Friday beginning May 9. Be sure to include your correct email for ticket deliverability.\n  \nDid you know?\n  \nEmerging Leaders 365 donors access our young professional events for free all year long\, no matter the venue\, by pledging an annual donation of $365 or $1/day to benefit our neighbors.  Donor access to tickets begin May 1st. \n  \nDon’t worry\, it’s always free to start your year of impact and connect with others by sharing your time\, talent\, or treasure.\nGeneral registration opens May 7th at the equitable price of $40 a ticket while they last. \n

DESCRIPTION:Show up. Speak out. Shape the future! \nJoin us on Wednesday\, February 5\, 2025\, for Postsecondary Basic Needs (PSBN) Lobby Day at the Capitol in Olympia to support students! \nWhy join? \nEducation is a proven pathway out of poverty\, but too many students in Washington state struggle to persist or complete educational programs because they cannot meet their basic needs for food\, mental + behavioral healthcare\, childcare\, housing\, or support to navigate existing systems. SUMMARY:MLK March for Equity - Community Volunteer Opportunity
DESCRIPTION:Seattle Martin Luther King Jr Coalition holds an annual MLK Celebration to celebrate and honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s legacy. The event includes a rally\, internships\, workshops\, youth led programming and job fair. \n  \nA signature part of the celebration is the annual march in honor of the peaceful protest that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. led during the civil rights movements to fight for equality. \n  \nAnd what’s a good march without signs? \n  \nGarfield High School campus\, where the festivities will take place is a large space so we are combining efforts with our United Way Emerging Leaders 365 young professionals and the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle Young Professionals to recruit volunteers to help people prepare for the march! \n  \nVolunteers will help by getting signs ready to distribute for the march right after the workshop and rally. Volunteers will be strategically dispersed throughout the Garfield High School parking lot to pass out signs. Handing out signs will begin at 11:45 am on January 20. You are welcome to come early to partake in additional activities in honor of Martin Luther King\, Jr. \n  \nThis opportunity is hosted by Emerging Leaders 365 and all are welcome to volunteer. Each opportunity supports United Way of King County’s mission to work side-by-side with communities to create a more equitable future for everyone! Ensuring everyone in our community has access to housing\, food security\, educational opportunities\, and financial stability.

SUMMARY:Put the Fun in Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:United Way’s Emerging Leaders 365 group is coming together this holiday season to raise $10\,000 to ensure everyone has equitable access to resources\, a quality education\, enough to eat\, and a safe place to call home. \n  \nWhat do these young professionals all have in common? A shared passion for creating a collective impact in our community. By putting the FUN in fundraisers\, they’re raising critical dollars to help our neighbors. \n  \nTake part in the action by making a gift to support the collective campaign or supporting a specific fundraiser. \n  \nAnd here’s the icing on the cake: Microsoft will match every dollar to DOUBLE that impact—that’s $20\,000 for our neighbors’ needs! \n  \nWill you join hundreds of your fellow United Way supporters to help our creative fundraisers reach our goal? Every dollar counts. \n  \nAfter all\, United is how we can all thrive! \n  \nStart your own fundraiser\, check out a fundraising event\, or make a donation toward the goal! The beauty of peer-to-peer fundraising is that everyone’s small efforts create a large impact\, so let’s do some good.
