SUMMARY:Connect for Good - Fighting Homelessness
DESCRIPTION:Take your volunteering and community engagement up a notch with our Connect for Good opportunities. \nDo you have questions about why people are homeless? What our community is doing about the issue? What’s working\, what’s already been tried and what isn’t working? Our next Connect for Good opportunity will give you the chance to get answers to all those questions (and more) so that you can understand contributing factors as well as solutions that are moving people safely into permanent homes. \nOver three weeks (and just three sessions) you’ll learn a ton about the issue of homelessness in King County—including contributing factors and solutions that are working. We’ll also cover how to engage your networks in the fight to end homelessness and then volunteer as a group at the Community Resource Exchange where you’ll get to directly help people experiencing homelessness. \nSessions will be held on Feb. 20\, 27 and March 13. Sign up now. \n

The organization provides 91\,000 meals per day to local food assistance programs\, and that\, combined with policy work\, creates a sustainable approach to stopping hunger. SUMMARY:Unjust Housing: Racism in Homelessness
DESCRIPTION:In Seattle\, it’s clear homelessness is an injustice. A history of discriminatory housing practices means a disproportionate number of people of color experience homelessness. We can change that. \nIn this Emerging Leaders panel\, we’ll explore how racism causes housing injustice in King County. You’ll hear from policy experts Linda Taylor\, Housing Director of Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle\, Diane Sugimura\, former Director of the Seattle Department of Planning and Development\, and Colleen Echohawk\, Executive Director of the Chief Seattle Club. Deborah Horne of KIRO 7 will moderate. Join the discussion to address these disparities for a more equitable Seattle. \nLight food and drinks are provided\, plus time for Q&A. Free parking is available. Doors open at 6pm\, with the program beginning at 6:30pm. This event is open to all young professionals with a pay-what-you-can donation. (Speaker Series like this are always free for Emerging Leaders 365 members). \nThanks to our sponsor\, Casey Family Programs\, all proceeds support United Way of King County’s work to reduce inequities and move people into homes. \n\n \n

SUMMARY:Pack No-Cook Bags with Pike Market Food Bank
DESCRIPTION:The Pike Market Food Bank is an important resource for people experiencing homelessness in Downtown Seattle. \nFor this project\, Emerging Leader volunteers will be packing No Cook Bags for clients facing homelessness. No Cook Bags contain healthy\, nutritious\, ready-to-eat and non-perishable foods that do not require a kitchen to prepare or store. Food Bank guests wanting a No-Cook Bag do not need to complete any paperwork or have an ID to access the food. To complete this activity\, volunteers will form an assembly line to pack the bags and prepare the work area for the next day’s tasks. This may require some volunteers to lift up to 20 lbs. at a time. Food Bank staff will lead the activity to answer any questions and provide support. \nThis event will introduce volunteers to the unique needs and challenges faced by people experiencing homelessness. Staff will provide an orientation to contextualize the activity and a closing reflection on the structural factors related to homelessness and marginalization. Volunteers and staff will discuss how and why marginalized groups are disproportionately represented in the homeless population. During this event\, volunteers will reflect on the challenges people experiencing homelessness face while navigating Seattle’s social service network and how we can make the services more accessible to everyone. \nSign up here to volunteer.
