SUMMARY:Support Seattle advocates to prep for Lobby Day
DESCRIPTION:Public policy affects all facets of Seattle life\, from the number of buses that run your route to work to the number of people sleeping unsheltered every night. It takes a lot to create – or change – policy\, but one of the most important ways to do so is to make your voice heard! Lobby Day gives everyone the chance to reach their legislators about issues they truly care about. \nWe’ll be assembling packets for legislators and lobby day volunteers for United Way and our partner organizations. These packets will help legislators understand and support United Way’s policy priorities\, and help volunteers talk about those priorities when they meet with legislators. \nJoin us to get ready for the day\, learn a bit more about what it means to lobby\, and maybe even volunteer to make your own voice heard on Lobby Day! \nSign up to volunteer here.

SUMMARY:Help End Childhood Hunger with Emergency Feeding Program
DESCRIPTION:There are a million people in Washington at risk of going hungry every night\, and the Emergency Feeding Program aims to alleviate hunger by making nutritious food available when and where people need it. At the King County facility\, donations are collected\, sorted\, and packaged into fifteen different types of food bags – from diabetic to Asian or Latino or East African to baby. \nThen\, the Emergency Feeding Program partners with agencies around the county to deliver the food bags and ensure that every family\, no matter their financial situation\, has access to nutrition. \nWe’ll be lending a hand in various ways – labeling\, tapping and cleaning collection barrels; sorting food in the warehouse; maybe even some administrative assistance to help ensure operations are running smoothly. \nSign up to volunteer here.

SUMMARY:Emerging Leaders MLK Day opportunity
DESCRIPTION:Join United Way of King County Emerging Leaders in honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr in partnership with the Accelerator YMCA! \nThe Y is a nonprofit like no other. Since 1973\, the Accelerator YMCA has been a catalyst sparking youth and young adults to take risks to create innovative solutions to the challenges facing our city and our world. Last year\, Accelerator served over 10\,000 teens and young adults with its programs. \nFor this project\, we will gather at their Downtown branch location for a time of education and outreach. The goal of this event is to discuss the importance of MLK Jr.’s legacy and how we continue to effectively help those marginalized groups in our community. We will then utilize the time to watch a relevant and important documentary. The viewing will be followed by a group discussion and debrief. Following the facilitated conversation\, our volunteers will get to participate in the Seattle’s annual MLK march (which is right next to our Downtown location). They will get to hand out Y swag\, snacks and water to participants in the march. \nLight food and refreshments will be provided during this time for our volunteers. \nSign up to volunteer here.

SUMMARY:Be a Kitchen Helper and Fight Poverty
DESCRIPTION:Are you a seasoned chef? Pride yourself on that amazing homemade pho? Can you barely tell which end of the knife is which? \nNo matter which of those questions you answered “yes” to\, we still want you to come prepare a meal with other Emerging Leaders in the FareStart Community Meals kitchen! FareStart is an amazing (and delicious) partner of United Way’s – but this time\, instead of them bringing food to us\, we’re bringing helping hands to them. \nPoverty is a perpetual cycle—especially for people who are homeless\, in recovery\, or previously incarcerated. For them\, finding and keeping a job is a huge struggle. FareStart helps people overcome the barriers to employment by developing the work and life skills they need to have lifelong careers. In turn\, their amazing talent and hard work fuels the organization’s social enterprise restaurants\, cafes\, catering and community meals programs. \nSign up to volunteer here.

SUMMARY:Support our Free Tax Preparation Campaign
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, United Way volunteers help thousands of low-income people prepare their taxes. For many clients\, tax credits and refunds are critical to keeping food on the table and a roof overhead. Volunteers also connect people to savings opportunities and public benefits that they may not even know are available to them. \nThe Free Tax Preparation Campaign is part of a community-wide effort to help 50\,000 people escape poverty by 2020. We know it works\, and with your help we can continue to serve more people each year. \nJoin your fellow Emerging Leaders as we help sort and bundle outreach and informational materials for this year’s Free Tax Campaign. \nSign up to volunteer here. \n  \nYou can also sign up to be a Free Tax Volunteer at our exclusive shift for Emerging Leaders on Tuesday evenings.

SUMMARY:Holiday Special- Volunteer Get Together and Give Back
DESCRIPTION:Over the past year\, Emerging Leaders volunteers have accomplished some amazing things! Hundreds of you have visited 20+ sites and lent a hand doing everything from gardening at Marra Farm to bundling diapers at Westside Baby. We’re building a community where people have homes\, students graduate\, and families are financially stable – and with your help\, each day we get closer to that goal. \nNow it’s our turn to give back to you! Please join us for a holiday party where we’ll celebrate the impact Emerging Leaders have had this year. We’ll have all sorts of holiday treats\, including staples like hot chocolate & cookies\, and you’ll be able to mingle and chat with your fellow Leaders. \nBut that’s not all! We know you\, and we know you’re always looking for ways to give back. With that in mind\, we’ll have a few stations where you can create holiday thank you cards for Emerging Leader donors and decorate cookies that will be delivered to Mary’s Place (where women and children find shelter as the days get rainy and the nights get cold). \nRSVP here for this annual event.
