SUMMARY:Make your voice heard at United Way's Lobby Day!
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with United Ways from around the state\, United Way of King County will be spending the day educating state legislators on and advocating for our public policy goal: creating a community where people have homes\, students graduate\, and families are financially stable. Our expertise and experience working with our community and how the government can support that work help us move legislation and public funding to make it possible. \nJoin a group of volunteers to make your voice heard on the issues that you care about! We’ll provide a brief phone training prior to Lobby Day for participants to become familiar with our core public policy issues\, as well as talking points and background information in day-of packets for all volunteers. \nSign up for Lobby Day! \nPlease note that this opportunity is part of a broader United Way of King County project and is not specific to Emerging Leaders.

SUMMARY:Tackle hunger with Food Lifeline
DESCRIPTION:Food Lifeline works with the food industry and its surpluses to come up with creative solutions to stopping hunger\, including redirecting good food from manufacturers\, farmers\, grocery stores and restaurants that might otherwise go to waste. The organization provides 91\,000 meals per day to local food assistance programs\, and that\, combined with policy work\, creates a sustainable approach to stopping hunger. \nEach year\, Food Lifeline sorts through 40 million pounds of food. Inspecting and packing this food takes a lot of hands! Emerging Leaders will assist with inspection\, sorting and repacking donations for distribution to the network of 275 hunger relief partners across Western Washington. \nClick here to reserve your spot!

SUMMARY:Leading the way for race and social justice with Seattle Chief of Police\, Kathleen O'Toole
DESCRIPTION:Our upcoming Speaker Series event features Seattle’s Chief of Police and United Way of King County board member\, Kathleen O’Toole. Join us for an intimate conversation about Chief O’Toole’s career journey\, leadership philosophies and work around the Seattle Police Department’s race and social justice initiative. \nChief O’Toole is a career police officer and lawyer who has earned an international reputation for her leadership and reform strategies. She is Seattle’s first female Chief of Police serving since June 2014. She has held several other high-profile positions throughout her career – often being the first woman appointed to the role – including Boston Police Commissioner\, Massachusetts Secretary of Public Safety and Superintendent (Chief) of the Metropolitan District Commission Police and Lieutenant Colonel overseeing Special Operations in the Massachusetts State Police. In 2012\, she completed a six-year term as Chief Inspector of the Gardia Síochána Inspectorate\, an oversight body responsible for bringing reform\, best practice and accountability to the 17\,000 member Irish national police service. \nSpace is limited for this exclusive Emerging Leaders event\, so be sure to RSVP today. \n

SUMMARY:Prepare a meal with FareStart
DESCRIPTION:This project has reached capacity! Please join us for another opportunity instead. \nAre you a seasoned chef? Pride yourself on that amazing homemade pho? Can you barely tell which end of the knife is which? \nNo matter which of those questions you answered “yes” to\, we still want you to come prepare a meal with other Emerging Leaders in the FareStart Community Meals kitchen! FareStart is an amazing (and delicious) partner of United Way’s – but this time\, instead of them bringing food to us\, we’re bringing helping hands to them. \nPoverty is a perpetual cycle—especially for people who are homeless\, in recovery\, or previously incarcerated. For them\, finding and keeping a job is a huge struggle. FareStart helps people overcome the barriers to employment by developing the work and life skills they need to have lifelong careers. In turn\, their amazing talent and hard work fuels the organization’s social enterprise restaurants\, cafes\, catering and community meals programs.

SUMMARY:Support the Eastside community with Jubilee REACH
DESCRIPTION:Far too often\, parents in our community have to make the choice between working to put food on the table and spending time with their kids. \nJubilee REACH helps solve that problem on the Eastside\, where it works to provide access to assistance programs and youth services. They offer mentoring\, tutoring\, and over 20 after-school clubs and sports at various Bellevue public schools. \nThe Thrift Store is a huge part of making that work possible\, and every dollar of net profit goes back to the community. If you’ve ever worked in retail\, you know the drill: we’ll be in the front of the house (re-stocking the floors and shelves\, organizing racks and other household items\, and helping customers) and also the back (hanging clothes\, sorting through donations\, cutting price tags\, tagging prices on merchandise and receiving donations from donors). \nClick here to RSVP today!

SUMMARY:Support Seattle advocates with prep for Lobby Day
DESCRIPTION:Public policy affects all facets of Seattle life\, from the number of buses that run your route to work to the number of people sleeping unsheltered every night. It takes a lot to create – or change – policy\, but one of the most important ways to do so is to make your voice heard! Lobby Day gives everyone the chance to reach their legislators about issues they truly care about. \nWe’ll be preparing information packets for Lobby Day advocates\, as well as thank you bags for advocates and legislators. Join us to get ready for the day\, learn a bit more about what it means to lobby\, and maybe even volunteer to make your own voice heard on Lobby Day on 2/23! \nClick here to register today!

On this day\, volunteers will work in teams of 2-3 to conduct a visual count of individuals experiencing homelessness across King County. You’ll partner with an expert guide to walk a route in the early morning and see firsthand the work we’re doing to tackle homelessness – and how much work is left to be done. \nClick here to learn more and sign up – and make sure you list United Way of King County as the “Agency/Organization” in order to attend our specialized training. \nPlease note that this opportunity is part of a broader United Way of King County project and is not specific to Emerging Leaders.

SUMMARY:Support young families with Westside Baby
DESCRIPTION:Do you know how much a monthly supply of diapers costs per child? Or how much of that cost is covered by food stamps or other assistance programs? \nYou’ll learn the answers to those questions (and so much more) when you join Emerging Leaders at Westside Baby. They’re the only social service agency in the West King County area that collects\, inspects\, and distributes free diapers\, clothing\, cribs and safety gear for babies and children. In the past sixteen years\, they’re provided $16.5 million worth of free diapers\, clothing and gear to help more than 195\,000 infants and children. \nWith all the support Westside Baby provides to families\, we though it only fair to support Westside Baby! Emerging Leaders will spend a few hours sorting donations of clothing and toys\, filling orders\, creating clothing bags\, and bundling diapers. \nClick here to learn more and reserve your spot.

SUMMARY:Serve a holiday meal for the homeless with the Low Income Housing Institute
DESCRIPTION:This project has reached capacity! Please join us for another opportunity instead. \nJoin Emerging Leaders in honoring Dr. King’s legacy by supporting those in need this MLK Day. In partnership with the Low Income Housing Institute\, we’ll be visiting the Ballard and Interbay encampments to serve and share a lunch with those living in the camps. \nIt’s an amazing opportunity to see firsthand what it’s like to not be housed and learn from those who deal with its challenges every day – and to make a huge difference with something as simple as a hot meal. You’ll leave the project with a deeper understanding of homelessness and how economic injustice from the high cost of living affects a diverse population of Seattleites\, including families with children\, seniors\, veterans\, immigrants and refugees. \n

SUMMARY:Hands-on learning for kids with the Vietnamese Friendship Association
DESCRIPTION:We can all agree: when kids – regardless of ethnicity\, religion\, or socioeconomic status – do better\, we all do better. More importantly\, education builds a strong foundation that our community can grow on. \nEmerging Leaders will partner with the Vietnamese Friendship Association to lend a hand in building that foundation. The Vietnamese community in Seattle is a key part of what makes our city ours\, and the VFA is dedicated to making sure it’s a community that thrives. Unfortunately\, recently arrived refugee and immigrant youth face incredible barriers to success and self-sufficiency\, often falling more than a year behind their English-speaking peers in school. \nVolunteers will have fun with kids in team-building academic and service-learning activities – in a time when a lot of kids are uncertain about the future\, there’s no time to wait when it comes to helping them build their own. \nClick here to learn more and reserve your spot today.

SUMMARY:Prep for United Way's Free Tax Prep Program!
DESCRIPTION:Say that three times fast. \nEvery year\, United Way’s Free Tax Prep Program helps tens of thousands of low-income families maximize their tax return by training thousands of volunteers on the intricacies of tax returns – especially on how to file for the Earned Income Tax Credit. When you’re a single mom who sometimes has to choose between paying the rent and paying for your kids’ school supplies\, an extra $3000 can go a long way towards building financial stability. \nTax season is nearly upon us\, and that means we’re getting ready to open hundreds of free tax sites around King County. Emerging Leaders will lend a hand to prep kits for these tax sites\, making sure every location is ready to go on day one. SUMMARY:Emerging Leaders Holiday Special: Volunteer Get Together and Give Back!
DESCRIPTION:Over the past six months\, Emerging Leaders volunteers have accomplished some amazing things! Hundreds of you have visited 20+ sites and lent a hand doing everything from gardening at Marra Farm to bundling diapers at Westside Baby. We’re building a community where people have homes\, students graduate\, and families are financially stable – and with your help\, each day we get closer to that goal. \nNow it’s our turn to give back to you! Please join us for a holiday party where we’ll celebrate the impact Emerging Leaders have had this year – and all attendees will receive a little thank-you gift for making it possible. We’ll have all sorts of holiday treats\, including staples like hot chocolate & cookies\, and you’ll be able to mingle and chat with your fellow Leaders. \nBut that’s not all! We know you\, and we know you’re always looking for ways to give back. With that in mind\, we’ll have a few stations where you can decorate gift bags and stuff them with staples like soap & socks for YouthCare (which provides resources for the most vulnerable members of our community when they’re in need) and decorate cookies that will be delivered to Mary’s Place (where women and children find shelter as the days get rainy and the nights get cold). \nWe can’t wait to see you! Click here to let us know you’re in.

SUMMARY:Building beautification with the Downtown Emergency Center
DESCRIPTION:Now you can double your impact! For every volunteer hour at this project\, we’ll donate a pair of socks to keep cold toes toasty this winter season. \nCalling all handy Emerging Leaders! We’re partnering with the Downtown Emergency Center (DESC) for some good old-fashioned building beautification. DESC has been providing emergency shelter for vulnerable adults – especially those living with behavioral health disorders and chronic homelessness – since 1979. The organization has grown with Seattle’s needs and now also offers an array of clinical services and other support. \nAs we all know\, it’s hard enough to keep one tiny apartment clean for a weekend\, much less keep an entire building spiffy for 35+ years! That’s why Emerging Leaders will be lending a hand to paint\, fix\, and otherwise spruce up DESC. Before you dig out those paintbrushes\, click here to snag your spot.

SUMMARY:Give kids in need the chance to read with Page Ahead
DESCRIPTION:This project has reached capacity! Please join us for another volunteer project instead. \nImagine a pile of 2.7 million children’s books spread across the state of Washington. Now imagine serving more than 850\,000 kids with those books and other literary programs. Seems like an impossible challenge\, right? Thankfully\, it’s a challenge that Page Ahead has been rising to since 1990. It’s the #1 provider of children’s books and services in Washington and focuses on helping kids from low-income families bump up their reading level and gain the English skills they need to succeed in school. \nThere’s nothing better than curling up with a good book and a cup of warm cider (or a PSL\, anyone?) on a crisp fall day\, and Emerging Leaders will join Page Ahead to make sure the next generation of learners has the chance to do just that. We’ll be supporting the organization in its work – organizing and bundling books\, tidying the facility\, etc. – so that it can spend the next 25 years supporting another million kids across the state. \n

SUMMARY:Get ready for fall with Friends of Youth
DESCRIPTION:October brings cooler temps and more rainy days – for most of us\, that just means an extra layer and maybe a raincoat. However\, for homeless youth\, what seems minor to most people can be a huge burden. Friends of Youth helps alleviate that burden; it’s the only youth shelter on the Eastside\, and offers services and resources in addition to a dry\, warm place to sleep. \nEmerging Leaders will be lending a hand at the organization to prep for fall\, when shelters get busier and staff need all the help they can get. Needs vary week to week\, so we’ll be pitching in wherever necessary\, from light gardening outside to prepping and organizing materials inside. \nHelp us ease the cold-weather impact on homeless youth – email Cassandra to sign up today!

SUMMARY:Get healthy food to hungry hands with Food Lifeline
DESCRIPTION:Here at United Way\, we believe that hunger is a problem we can help solve – and it’s with great partners like Food Lifeline that we’re making strides towards achieving that goal. Food Lifeline works with the food industry and its surpluses to come up with creative solutions to stopping hunger\, including redirecting good food from manufacturers\, farmers\, grocery stores and restaurants that might otherwise go to waste. Email Cassandra to be one pair of those helping hands.

SUMMARY:Serve a warm meal with YWCA Angeline's
DESCRIPTION:This project has reached capacity! Please join us for another opportunity instead. \nIt seems that lately\, all anyone can talk about is the approaching cold weather\, and here at UWKC it’s no different! As the weather gets chilly\, warm food gets even more comforting – so Emerging Leaders are partnering with Angeline’s to provide homeless women a safe space for a hearty lunch. At Angeline’s\, these women not only have access to meals\, but also to laundry\, showers\, activities and connections to other services. \nAt Angeline’s\, we’ll add a fun touch to the dining room with colorful tablecloths and napkins before serving lunch to guests (usually 100-150 women each day!). It’s also a great opportunity to chat and offer a friendly face to those in need.

SUMMARY:Support young families with Westside Baby
DESCRIPTION:Pop quiz time!\nQ: How much does an adequate monthly supply of diapers cost per child? A: $70-$100 (that’s up to $1200 per year – just for diapers!)\nQ: How much of that cost is covered by food stamps or other assistance programs? A: $0 \nThose stats make Westside Baby’s work all the more impactful: they’re the only social service agency in the West King County area that collects\, inspects and distributes free diapers\, clothing\, cribs and safety gear for babies and children. In the past sixteen years\, they’ve provided $16.5 million worth of free diapers\, clothing and gear to help more than 195\,000 infants and children. \nWith all of the support Westside Baby provides to families\, we thought it only fair to support Westside Baby! Emerging Leaders will spend a few hours sorting donations of clothing and toys\, filling orders\, creating clothing bags\, and bundling diapers. Email Cassandra to reserve your space today.
